A surprisingly great film, I had thought this was the original version of Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait but it isn't. It starts off as it is going to be at least somewhat like the Beatty film but soon goes in a very different direction.

Don Ameche was brilliant as Henry. This was a role he was born to play. Gene Tierney is outstanding as his wife Martha. This is my third Tierney film and there is one thing all three films have in common. Won't spoil it. Even though the aging process from back then wasn't the best, and her hairstyle for when she is older is odd to say the least, her performance is truly wonderful, especially her final waltz with Henry. Quite a moving scene.

I was surprised and happy to find out this film was nominated for Best Picture, though there were ten films nominated, which doesn't make it as special. It lost to Casablanca. I was a bit disappointed that none of the fine actors were nominated.

It doesn't get much better than seeing Gene Tierney in Technicolor.
