cagney or fred astaire

whom do you think was a better dancer?

reply

Good Golly! There is no flipping way that you can compare the two men as dancers. Personally, I would say that Cagney is very much in the mode of Gene Kelly, where Astaire is far more balletic and like "Mischa" in style.

I would personally rank Kelly as the best, with Cagney close behind.

It's really a matter of personal preference. I adore Gene Kelly's dancing, with Cagney's dancing a close second. While I recognize that Fred Astaire was a superb, elegant dancer, he is not my first choice. I like the more athletic, energetic style of dancing that Kelly and Cagney do.

I prefer Cagney, though Astaire was wonderful too.

BEST MALE DANCERS IN FILM:

Ballet: Baryshnikov

Ballroom: Astaire

Athletic: Tossup, Kelly or Buddy Ebsen

Vaudeville style: Cagney

Tap: Tossup, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson or Nicholas Brothers

All around: Donald O'Conner (And he could talk to mules!!)

For this movie Cagney was perfect.
