The NEW colorized version.

Check out the Video Player section of www.bingcrosby.com to see how the new colorizing process turned out. I'm generally against such things, but it does look very nice indeed. I'm tempted to buy the new release.

Wow! How do they do that?? You'd never know it had been filmed in black and white! I'm usually against these things too (if someone colourised It's a Wonderful Life I think I'd stage a protest!) but this film could be beautiful in colour. I think I'll have to buy it! Thanks for pointing it out!

You're very welcome.

Merry Christmas!

Actually, the same company already colorized "It's a Wonderful Life".

reply

Noooo!! I didn't know about that! We don't tend to get these versions in the UK. Oh well, I suppose it's a bit late to protest now!!

They did colorize its a Wonderful life and it was released last year where have you been?

It's a wonderful life looks very nice in color. Its also packaged with the B&W version

reply

Obviously I've been living under a rock for the past year! I'm really struggling to find a Region 2 version though so I'm not sure that it was definitely released here a year ago; I could well be wrong though.

I, like you, am also generally against colorizing movies, but this movie is an exception. I LOVE Bing Crosby, I have every movie that is out on DVD. I prefer White Christmas. Anyway, when I first saw Holiday Inn years ago, the first thing I said was with all the beautiful costumes, etc. I think it would be better in color. I was a little hesitant to purchase a colorized version, because normally they look like tinted black and white films. However, they did a fantastic job!

I agree, I just watched the colorized version (from 2008) and think it is beautiful (I really liked the Easter Parade part with all the cherry trees in bloom).

I think if they colorize a black and white film that used shadow and light as part of the storytelling process, those films should be left alone. It's A Wonderful Life used light and dark very effectively, as did Casablanca, and they were both colorized (yuck). But the musicals, like Holiday Inn, don't lose anything with colorization IMHO.

The early colorization process had a look that was pretty awful, too--the colors were muddy and not nice to look at. The technique has improved a lot since then so colors are much more subtle and life like.

I am totally against colorization of black and white movies. And I will never pay money for one, no matter how well they've been done.

I suffered through watching the colorized version of It's a Wonderful Life, several years ago, because I couldn't get my young daughter to watch it otherwise. She is a grown woman now. But, when she was a child, she refused to watch anything in black and white. Not so today.

I saw where Meet John Doe was on WGN tonight, so I turned it over and it was colorized!! I thought about just turning the color off, but changed the channel instead.

The case against colorization isn't an issue of the quality of the colorization. It's a question of altering the work that was done by the film's makers. Whether they made the movie in black-and-white because they wanted to, or because they couldn't afford to make it in color, it doesn't matter. The fact is that they did make it in black-and-white, and all of their makeup, costuming, decorating, lighting, and film choice and processing decisions were made for black-and-white.

Lol colorized films are abominations.

Colourizing is blasphemous.
