Really Bad Acting

In my opinion, Simone couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.

In My Melancholy Sutures, Nigel Millard trapped Simone in a paper bag, and two scenes later, in about 20 minutes, she was out of the bag. So you're wrong, Simone was able to act her way out of a paper bag.

Personally, I don't think anyone who understood the character she portrayed could deny that she did a great job doing.

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies

I didn't like any of the actors in the movie. But I believe this is due to the poor dialogues. The only good things in this movie is its use of shadows. But nothing else.

I agree that her acting wasn't the greatest, but it was still a great film.

Shocking. Thought the whole movie was poor

Omg. Finally. I always thought that too. What in the world did Lewton see in her. She could barely talk! Her film resume shows others thought the same way.

OMG so many would be acting teachers on this post!

That statement makes me think that there are serious limits to your knowledge of international movies. Simon was only in the US during the years of the German Occupation of France. Both before and after the war, Simon was a star in her native France (and France has always had one of the biggest and best film industries in the world, though clearly not as big as the US). Not only was Simon a star in France, but she also worked with a number of the greats of French cinema (including Jean Renoir and a couple different movies for Max Ophuls).

i likes the woman who played Irena, i thought she was very charming and yet mysterious which was exactly how the role should have been played imo

however i agree that the husband part wasn't played/written well

so many movies, so little time

I thought she did a pretty good job. She was able to make the character kind, sad, and mysterious all at the same time. Her performance seemed to give the character a lot of depth and I think it's part of what makes the movie so memorable.

Jane Randolph was excellent in the swimming pool scene. Tom Conway (like his brother George Sanders) is always entertaining. Simone Simon's unusual voice sticks in the memory.

Regarding the rest of the cast: They were adequate, no more. I don't think the casting hurt the film a lot. Because it's plot-driven and fast-moving and evocative and disturbing, it's still a good movie.
