matches

Throughout the film, matches are shown, not shown, talked about, used, etc. I kept waiting for them to play an important role before the end of the movie. The last match is that with which his mother lights a candle. She then drops the match and leaves. At that point I thought she had inadvertently set the house on fire. But nothing happens. There is nothing else about matches. Are we supposed to think that they are a "match"? Did anyone else wonder about this? Or have an answer to why there are so many match references?

interesting observation. will have to think about that during my annual holiday viewing this year...

A few reasons I can think of .. everyone smoked and matches were a necessity of life on a farm without electricity, particularly in the middle of Winter. Remember the road sign fire lanterns? Someone had to keep those lit, too. I don't think there's any special meaning.

And the characters who lived in electrified houses and apartments all had switches on the wall. Must mean something...
