Nina and Bill

Spoilers follow:
The character of Nina, played by Rita Hayworth, was written a bit too naive and idealistic for my taste. She seemed too pure of heart for the milieu she inhabited and too forgiving of Bill (Fairbanks) who behaved like a selfish cad until late in the film (and hence their relationship). She kept remarking on his obvious desire to help Mr. Engle but I saw little evidence of it. If anything, I’d think Bill’s motivation was to win her favor rather than do a good deed for a fellow down on his luck. I wasn’t convinced that Bill had turned over a new leaf and would make her a good husband.
