personally, i would pick:
Heathcliff: Joaquin Pheonix or Orlando Bloom
(they both have that tormented look, dark and
handsome and can transform into any character)
Catherine: Kate Winslet (she has soft features which would contrast with
Joaquin's hard features. That could cause them to
appear to have chemistry. Also, she has that old
fashioned classic beauty.)

My choice would be Keira Knightley or Kate Winslet. Actually Rachel Weisz could pull it off too. But uhh, guess we need a younger actress. Rosamund Pike and Emily Blunt are great options.
For Heathcliff, Phoenix has to got to be the best. Depp could fit too but he wouldn't make the perfect Heathcliff.
Are we considering a remake of the 1939 movie or the novel? Both depict the characters in very different ways, casting would be affected. Heathcliff isn't the victimized, lovesick person you see in the movie in Bronte's novel. I loved the movie before I read the book.. then I turned on it because it gives people a false impression of the novel. Anyways, going back to my original question because it makes a big difference.
Insanity is knowing that what you do is completely idiotic but still somehow you just cant stop it.
I also think that Cillian Murphy or Jonathon Rhys-Myers would make perfect Heathcliffes. They both have that dark, tormented look going, and both are great actors. I also think that Sienna Miller would be a good Cathy, as she has an elegant beauty to her, but she also gives off a mischevious presence, as if toying with a man's heart.

I was just thinking about this today...
I was reading the book, and for some reason, Hugh Jackman kept popping into my head as the character of Heathcliff.
I don't know why, but I can see him playing that role.
As for Cathy, though, I have no idea.

I have disliked the idea of Angelina being Cathy since my English teacher told me about it last year--she just doesn't FIT in my mind. I think she'd make a fabulous Anna Karenina, but Cathy? Naah. Just not right. I'm also scared they'll change the script to accomodate for her star status--which would just suck. Seriously.
I think Johnny Depp could pull off Heathcliff. I think someone mentioned Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman? Both would be good choices. I especially liked the idea of Bale. Or maybe I just like the idea of looking at Bale. Haha. I do believe he could do the part justice, however.
I don't know if Kate Winslet is mean enough to be Cathy, but I'm not sure if I can think of someone who could top her. Maybe Keira Knightley. Not so sure, but maybe.

I agree with you about Depp even though I think he is a great actor I would always expect him to do something quirky with the character. And for some reason I just don't see him pulling off Heathcliff with a staight face.
Someone mentioned that Jonathan Rhys Meyers guy. I see his promos for the Tudors and I have to laugh when he yells I'm the king of England! He is so scrawny and fey. I was waiting for someone to shout, no you are not! And then slap him in the face. He is ok but not as Heathcliff.
I am not sure of the guys name but he played Horatio Hornblower. I think he would be a excellent choice for Heathcliff it was done today. And Kate Bekinsdale(spelling) woud be good as Cathy IMO

I think Richard Burton when he was young would of been very good. He was good at playing angry young men, sme goes for Richard Harris or any of those young British stars that were considred the angy young men generations back in the 50's and 60's.
For Cathy his wife Elizabeth Taylor who was gorgous and could of played off the part.
All I know is I do not want them to MTVeez the movie like they have done so many like Romeo and Juliet and Great Expectations. I can see it now Justin Timberlake and Jessica Simpson playing Cathy and Heathcliff.
