What does everyone think of the new version

think it will be any good? Trailer makes it look like they stuck close to the original story....still the 1939 version is a classic and those stars will be hard to top!!!

reply

no it will be stupid and no way could it ever be as good as the original....

nice socks, man.....

I saw the trailer today and although I usually dislike remakes,I am curious enough to plop down ten bucks to see this one.

I'm going to watch the new version; however like you, I feel that the 1939 version will be hard to top. The actresses alone in the 1939 version were in a class all by themselves, which I haven't really seen in the actresses of today.
When I go to see the new version, I'm not going to go in trying to compare it to the older movie. I made that misstake with You Got Mail!

While I love the original (who could possibly dislike it with the amazing cast and the fabulous wittiness through virtually every scene??) I am interested in seeing the new version. The trailer looks adorable and although I'm not a big fan of some of the actresses in it, from what the trailer shows it looks like they were well chosen. Heck, I wasn't a big fan of some of the actresses in the '39 version but still loved it. *smiles* I've decided that the best way to watch the updated version will be by not trying to compare it to the older film, I know there are going to be subtle and not-so-subtle changes to reflect the different perceptions and time each movie is taking place in so I'm going to try to enjoy it as a new spin on an old classic (just as I loved the version of Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio in it - sometimes updating classics can be wonderfully well done!). We'll all have to come back and share what we thought after we see it. :)

I agree with you! I love the original and I'm 23 year old straight male.

For me, Hollywood has completely destroyed the art of comedy when compared to the past and I can't see a remake of The Women ever expanding on the original, nor ever surpassing it, especially when the original is so remarkably fresh and funny today. In consequence of that and a plentiful more, I fully expect the remake to bomb, it looks absolutely atrocious whether I'm comparing it to the first filmed adaptation or not. The updated version will obviously include the jokes about sex, which were banned from the original, though judging by the talent of the cast and director, how do you top the pacing of the dialogue in the original, which is so fast, crisp and beautifully timed? The nuances in all the women's speeches were so amazingly witty I just cannot envision the actors being up to par with Cukor's all-star version of Booth's stinging play. Therefore, I expect the remake to fade into oblivion within a couple years.

You can never replace the original but I am excited! When we saw the preview it was 10 seconds in before I recognized the movie which is pretty good. If you can recognize a movie that fast it must be pretty close, but never the same of course

I think they are about to ruin my favorite movie.

I'll watch it when it comes out on DVD. I'm not eagerly looking forward to it though.

There's a lot of talented actresses in the cast, but when I see the trailer with Meg Ryan as Mary, I cringe. Maybe she'll surprise me and play her properly IMO, but it's going to be extremely difficult not to compare her to Norma Shearer constantly. I can see Annete Benning doing justice to Sylvia.

Also, I hope they don't modernize it too much in an overtly obnoxious way, ie. having the women texting and IM'ing a lot. I'm sure there will be a lot of plastic surgery jokes.

I posted about this on another thread - because of the era in which it was written I don't think a remake would be as effective because it is not a remake of the movie in the time period - the new version takes place in the here and now.

I feel a lot of the concepts and beliefs in the original would never play well or translate well today and would be called politically incorrect.

If they had filmed the remake and set it in the 1930's it would have been interesting to watch. I just don't think I can bring myself to watch the new one. There really isn't one star up to the caliber of the original cast. I am not knocking the actresses in the remake, but I'm sorry, I don't think that the current cast has the punch the original actresses brought to Cukor's direction.

Cukor was known as a "woman's director" and was noted for being able to work well with actresses. He had done a lot of work on Gone With the Wind until a few problems came up (such as Clark Gable) but he did a stellar job with The Women.
