Why did they want to escape?

So why did they keep trying to escape from the POW camp?

The conditions there were obviously way better than fighting in the trenches, so it wasnt that they were miserable and wanted a better situation.

Were they really that devoted to the war that they wanted to break out so that they could keep fighting? The whole message of this movie seemed anti-war to me, so it seems contradictory that the main characters would be written as pro-war.

In 'The Great Escape' it's stated that it's an officers duty to attempt to escape -the enemy has to devote more time and men to prevent escape etc.

All soldiers, at least in the US & presumably uniformly, are taught that it is their duty to evade capture & to escape.
