The Scarecrow's first ride

Most of us have grown up with either the Disney or Hammer Films version(s) of the tale. Disney gave us Patrick McGoohan as Dr. Syn, riding the Romney Marsh at night as the notorious smuggler known only as The Scarecrow. (The Disney film was based primarily on the final Syn novel, "Christopher Syn.") Hammer cast Peter Cushing in the role (although changing his name, so as to avoid problems with Disney). The Cushing film, NIGHT CREATURES (aka CAPTAIN CLEGG) was basically a remake of this first film, 1937's DOCTOR SYN...which, unlike the Disney film, used earlier Syn stories for their source material. Granted, this film has not aged as gracefully as other films from that era, but it's still a good slice of cloak & dagger cinema that makes for perfect viewing on a chilly autumn eve.

Having already seen the second and third rides, I can say this original still has something to offer. A plus side for me is the swaggering Roy Emerton, as Captain Collyer, who is one of my favorites from this era.
