Unfortunately I was not, as I had read several times about the controversy that scene stirred up. As people already mentioned Hitch later regretted going through with it due to the response from some critics and the public and wouldn't do it again..

It's a shame that he, as many other filmmakers, gave in for the ignorant masses that want rainbows and predictable happy endings in every single movie. Even though I was anticipating the scene I was very delighted with it as it felt very daring. Even today it's sort of a taboo to kill children and animals in movies.

I do think it works effectively to underscore the awfulness of terrorism. It works well in retrospect because we are used to that much suspense leading to someone escaping death. Usually if someone's going to die there's not as much of a buildup. His looks of wonderment at the parade are heartbreaking in retrospect.
