The original film of this type is the classic silent THE CAT AND THE CANARY which was remade quite successfully as a Bob Hope-Paulette Goddard comedy in 1939.

There's also THE OLD DARK HOUSE, A SHRIEK IN THE NIGHT, and MURDER HE SAYS among the comedy/romance/thrillers from the golden era.

They made a lot of similar movies (creepy house with a group of people) like this in the 30's. This was a good one.

I just watched The Bat (1959) with Vincent Price and thoroughly enjoyed it. Found this title as recommended on The Bat's boards.
