Arguably one of the funniest movies ever made...

This has to be one of the funniest movies ever made! Be sure to see the uncut version, with the scene where Fields is briefly jailed with a wife killer.

"My wife. I love her so much. I keel her!"

I agree! In my opinion it's Fields' funniest. Too bad it's never been released by Universal on DVD. Turner Classic Movies last aired it in 2001, when I made sure to tape it. You can go to the TCM site shown below and request it to be broadcast and suggest it as a DVD release.

I always liked Fields' thinly disguised contempt of the justice system which would jail an ordinary citizen picked up for petty theft with a "wife killer" or hardened criminal.

I'm not really a W. C. Fields fan, but you're right: this has to be one of the funniest comedies ever. I just couldn't help laughing all the time while watching!

Without a doubt -- always find myself whistling that Wabash song too.

Yes, more laugh-out-loud moments than any of the other Fields films I have watched. He probably had more control over the pacing since he was also directing. The crazy guy in the cell with him is great. His wife's voice off screen while he is dressing to investigate the cellar is great. True classic.

Agree. This was the movie that sold me on Fields. I had assumed I would not like him. It came on TV one day and the scene with the traffic cop was playing....I have never seen anything like it and it was funny as hell. Now I'm a big fan of the W.C. ;)

For years I had to keep remembering the title because it never had an official video release until DVD. I had a bootleg VHS for some years and was glad when the DVD set came out.

I think it's equal to The Bank Dick and It's a Gift, Never Give a Sucker... as Fields' funniest

This was shown on TV once on New Year's Eve. After weeks of build up, I was greatly looking forward to it, but felt quite disappointed. Forty-some years later I saw it again tonight in a local revival, but still felt rather disappointed. It's just too over the top for me I guess.
