Disappointed

now a days if you get 15 seconds of fame they write a book about it let alone a movie. It seems to me there were no books written about Spanky and his experiences in the Our Gang shorts, at least that I can find. I did stumble upon a few videos on You Tube about Spanky and the little rascals. One was an award show that was videotaped/super8 where Spanky gets an award. Well he talks non-stop and never takes any questions from the audience. He did mentioned his favorite short was "Kid from Borneo". He never mentioned our favorite short BL.
The other video was a documentry about the rascals from pre-spanky to the MGM shorts. Looks like it was made in 1984 and there were still alot of the gang still alive then. Spanky talks about when Alfalfa was first introduced--1935--but dosen't mention BL. Again I was disppointed BL was never brought up.
I think I saw Spanky on Jay Leno years ago but don't recall if BL was mentioned.
I always wondered what Spanky thought about that short, what he remembered and what kind of relationship he had with Kitty.

Well written spankyfan2

I've been looking for anything I could get my hands on ever since I first saw B/L. Today ,I believe , the only books still in print are Maltin's and Bann's book on the rascals. There is another book which was written in the 60's which is still easy to find but there is nothing at all mentioning B/L at all in it ,it's real crap.

There are about 6 more books which are way out of print and very difficult to find if not impossible generally they were printed in the 1930's .

One of the things I did was search magazine's for articles on the Our gang from the movies theaters or the Rascals from TV. I did find some stuff not a whole lot and it took me a lifetime to find what I did get. Another thing I was able to obtain on old microfeesh old newspaper reviews from local papers where they reviewed B/L . I read somewhere between 20-25 different reviews. All were very positive saying it was a comedic hit. But didn't give any info into anything about the actors at all in any of them.

Another point I'd like to say Spanky McFarland appeared on a national TV show hosted by Dick Clark I believe it was 1974.I wasn't a person who watched that show but a friend told me Spanky was going to be a guest. It seems to be a variety show where Clark hosted musical acts and comedians . Clark walked out into the audience and a man stands up and he introduces him as Spanky. Then Clark tells his people to put up a shot of Spanky in his "Our Gang" days and I couldn't believe it it was the shot from B/L just after the mother says "What has Barrymore or gable have that Spanky doesn't . And Spanky says " A moustache" with spanky standing on the side of the chair and grandma sitting in it looking up at Spanky's mother who is sitting on the arm of the chair.
Clark says to Spanky do you remember this one and Spanky says yes and then he said he had a greatdeal of fun with this one. Clark says Oh I remember you make your stage debut in this one. He asks the audience if they remember this short and they all applaud very long and loud. That was all their was I was glad I saw it and wished at the time I could have recorded it.
There was another TV which aired 1972-1974 I think it was a local show that was on in the LA area. I didn't see it but a friend of my did. The host had Spanky on as a guest .The show was all about the old films stars of days gone by Similar to the Joe Franklin show. Spanky was interviewed and did talk a lot about his days as the leader of the Rascals . One of the stories he told was about his relationship with Scotty which was real bad they hated each other. When Alfalfa came in he was quickly moved to be Spanky's best friend and Scotty was phased out. He spoke that Alfalfa was a real wild practical joker and he pulled many a stunt on Spanky but Spanky took it real well. It was mentioned that the actress playing Spanky's mother in their 1st short together tried to intervene but Alfalfa turned his attention to doing things to her and she backed off. I really wished I could have seen that show.

I know people who have tried in vain to get a copy of the original script to B/L of course trying to get the directors copy all for naught.

I know people who have tried to get the artwork or even a copy of the theatrical movie board which was a very colorful cartoonish ad for B/L the only thing they could ever get was the generic version which as a picture of all the rascals and then they printed the name of each short and change the name but it's still the same background.

I've tried to get something from the roach studios over the yrs like the stage prop, kitty's dress, Kitty's Beret or her shoes or something but nothing .

Some of the things you left out are the books on the Roach studios, Laurel and Hardy. Thelma Todd I'm sure there a thousand things I forgot.

I read somewhere that the cast in that short were asked not to talk about it be of what happened to his mother, I understand that kitty Kelly needed the money reluctantly took the part and was quite embarrassed after it happened, she felt degraded and humiliated especially with a lot of men and young men in the audience then entire gang watched her literally be made a complete and utter fool of on stage!
