What is this film's length???

Can anybody tell me this film's correct running time? The dvd I have is 63 minutes. A movie guide I consulted says 71 (as does IMDB) and warns of "shorter prints." However, the only dvd I could find online longer than 63 minutes gives a running time of 90 minutes! If anybody knows the true story, I would be ever so grateful if you'd let me know. Thanks!!! ( :

Interestingly, IMDb doesn't include any of the alternate versions in the listing there. The DVD I have runs 90-91 minutes and is, I think, the full-length version.

I think there are a couple of different versions of this film out there. I have the one thats running time is about 60 mins long. However in the book, "Dwight Frye's Last Laugh" they mention a comic episode involving Maude Eburne and a Great Dane, which is NOT in the dvd I have of the film.

reply

i'd say an hour

The Classic Horror Film Board is the place to look, people! No available/extant print runs longer than 63 minutes.

reply

Thanks, James, didn't know there was such a place! Great resource!

webothlovesoup, that scene with Dwight Frye, Maude Eburne and the great dane does exists in many prints. It is quite funny! It is in most TV prints (which have been shown on television for years). Try a different DVD edition, or try to record the complete version off of television.

I just saw the one with Maude Eburne and the Great Dane, and this (and other short sequences) add to the picture's length; and they add to the movie overall. It's a creaky old movie, but it has the goods, and it delivers them; and It's likely to ever acquire classic status. A fine sample of early sound horror

whoa....you have a version that runs 90+ minutes??? I have NEVER seen a print that runs over the standard 63-64 minutes, and never have heard of anyone who actually HAD in their possession a 90 minute version. Who is the company who put it out? Is it still available? You're SURE we're talking about the same movie here?

reply

That archive.org file is a 1 Min and 16 sec clip, not 76 min.
-and-
I've seen the version that says its 90 min available, I'll pick up a copy and check. The time is probably not listed correctly.

reply

The copy that is listed as being 90 minutes is wrong. I bought the DVD and that print actually runs 64 minutes.

reply

I found two different versions on archive.org. This one lasts 76 minutes: http://www.archive.org/details/CEP153. This one is 59 minutes: http://www.archive.org/details/TheVampireBat. I haven't watched either one yet.

Justin -

Check the time again on that first link! You say it's 76 minutes? It's 76 SECONDS of the opening shot (listed under "stock footage"), NOT the entire film.

The second link is to a slightly edited (if the time listed is correct) version of the film which, from nearly all accounts, runs 63-64 minutes.

I have never seen a print that exceeded that length nor have I ever heard of one existing.

Hope this helps solve some of the mystery.

Oh, my God, 76 seconds. That's quite a difference!

The one I watched ran 59 minutes, but that's cool there's a longer print. I'll check that out sometime!

reply

mine says 71

The version I own is in a 4 disc set called
"Vampires & More", a dreadful set really..
it is listed as 71 minutes on the case but the
actual film was roughly 60 minutes give or take
a few seconds...

While there might be some prints that have one or two very brief scenes, don't bother looking for a print over about 64 minutes. PERIOD.

One thing that a lot of you aren't putting into consideration is that some companies releasing this film on DVD are monkeying with the running time electronically. It is usually the same damn print run faster (for less running time) so that it can be included with another film on one side of a disk in a value multi-pack.

Others have even slowed down the transfer for a longer running time. They figure if it runs under 70 minutes or whatever people won't buy it because they think they aren't getting their monies worth with such a short film.

Man I would hate to watch the 90 minute version of this (if one exists), it would be slowed down so much it would drag some serious Biblical Donkey.

I just wish these fools would stop molesting films and give it to us as intended. It causes a lot less confusion.

I have the Mill Creek version which runs at just under 60 minutes. I also have another version I downloaded off the internet that runs just under 63 minutes. There is a chunk of film involving 3 separate scenes missing in the Mill Creek version at around the 30 minute mark. It is when Aunt Gussie returns to Herman to doctor his finger, she then realizes it is Herman, passes out and when she wakes up a dog is there. The next scene has Georgiana confronting Dr. Otto von Niemann about the Martha's crucifix which she found in Emil's room. The next scene has Aunt Gussie preparing a potion for herself, drinking it, and then belching. All totalled these make up for at least 4 minutes of missing footage which should leave the Mill Creek version running several minutes less than 60. So I'm not sure if there are scenes in the Mill Creek version missing from the other one I have or if the speeds may be different.

The version I saw was on television but with no adverts and it ran at about 65 minutes. Would like to see a longer version if possible. Good, old-fashioned gothic-style horror with comedic elements.

I came across an old film magazine from 1933 on the Media History Digital Library. This magazine had a review from this film's premiere. At the top it said "running time, 63 minutes". This happens to be the length of the print on the Alpha DVD. That's good enough for me.

reply

That settles the question. I just saw it on TCM and it was sixty-three minutes. The print they ran was fully restored, crystal-clear, with perfect sound, and included the hand-colored torches.
