Why Did E.E. Horton Kick the Flower Pot?

I adored this movie! The only part I wondered about: after their honeymoon night, why does Edward Everett Horton kick the flower pot? I assumed it was because he was impotent, but just wanted to make sure I was right. Oh how I love pre-code movies!
