Highly Overatted

i am a huge horror movie fan, actually fan is not the word...morbidly obsesses. I must say tough, despite the fact "White Zombie" wa sin fact the first film to feature the living dead or "zombies" the movie is awful, and any one can see that..horror movie fan or not. The only thing that stood out was Bela Lugosi's perfomance..why do you think it was lost for over 3 decades. DOnt get me wrong, i have high respect for this film, for the whole concept that it was the poineer in the genre, but its not that great.

White Zombie is everything a horror movie should be. Even 75 years later, sitting in my darkened living room, I was emotionally affected by this work of art. Overrated? Not at all.
If you like classic horror, you should love White Zombie.
What is great about this movie is that it doesn't drag along for hours. The story is simple, yes, but it is presented at a quick pace with many inspiring directoral elements along the way.
The atmosphere this movie creates is amazing, and presents a story that gets stuck in your head long after the last grainy image has faded.

I disagree. I thought this film was quite good. Visually, it's absolutely stunning, with striking use of wipes, stark lighting, superimpositions, and artful fades and dissolves. The amplified sound effects were likewise extremely effective and impressive. The spooky atmosphere was very strong and vividly rendred. Best of all, Bela Lugosi was outstanding as the sinister witch doctor "Murder" Legendre.

This is a brilliant film, briliant. Full of superb atmoshpere and some very eerie scenes.

I would not say it is overrated, no. There is little point in expecting too much of these old horror movies - it is 77 years since this was released; I like all of Lugosi's movies (less so, THE BLACK SLEEP) and so I give this one 6 marks out of ten.

White Zombie is a very powerful film and it is near prefect for it's story-telling, filming, and other movie aspects.

Granted one should view the best version available as if not mastered it can lose some of its appeal.

I used to think highly of this movie when I had only seen it on a videotape with a picture so dark it was hard to see and sound so poor it was hard to make out the dialogue. Back then I thought the movie possessed "atmosphere".

Now that I've watched the restored Roan version on DVD and have seen the movie as it was meant to be and have followed the story in its entirety, I would have to agree that this movie doesn't live up to its hype. It's not bad, mind you, just overrated. I almost wish I had stuck with my 4th generation VHS copy instead of upgrading, to preserve the illusion that this is a great movie.

For atmosphere, I prefer Dracula. For overall weirdness and to see Bela at his creepiest, I thought Murders on the Rue Morgue was better. The Black Cat, co-starring Boris Karloff, was Bela's best film, IMO (and the only one in which he didn't play the villain).

IF YOU CAN BE OBJECTIVE AND ARE A LUGOSI FAN, THEN THERE IS NO QUESTION WHAT PICTURE HE GAVE HIS BEST PERFORMANCE. "THE RAVEN", IS SECOND TO NONE, BY A MILE AND THEN SOME.

The fact that the OP posted a highly negative statement about a great film and hasn't revisited this discussion in five years makes the red "TROLL LIGHT" flash and the alarm buzzer go off.

I agree. The problem is that you get a lot of idiots coming to this film only because Rob Zombie decided to name his band after it.
Also, the OP can't even spell "overrated" properly!
