Movies should be beyond the sin of unique interpretation... David Lynch
I agree whole-heartedly. The cinematography in many of the scenes especially the one with the girl tied to the wooden cross is breath-taking. The film creates something of a mysterious and macabre atmosphere which seems to draw in the viewer, yet at the same time it creates a somewhat uncomfortable feeling of repulsion (an atmosphere many Universal horror films could achieve with ease in the early days). Essentially, 'Murders in the Rue Morgue' is a perfect example of gothic horror done right.
"Pull the string, pull the string!" -Bela Lugosi
It's a beautifully made film despite the story being told.
I was disappointed to see the message board so empty for this one.
I watched it again last night, severely underrated...
shareI agree, Murders in the Rue Morgue is an underrated classic. I think it's definitely one of Bela Lugosi's best films, right up there with Dracula in my opinion. Lugosi played another memorable, spooky & interesting character, while the film itself really had a great eerie atmosphere and setting. All in all, Murders in the Rue Morgue is just an excellent gothic horror film.

Bela was wonderful, as usual. Every single second he's on screen is priceless.
Even though I'm sure most people will find the rest of the cast annoying, I liked it quite a bit. Sidney Fox was very pretty and lovely, and I'm truly surprised to find out that the leading man was Leon Ames under another name! The atmosphere was unsettling and great, too.
