Mr Preposterous in a Field of Corn

All those snow flakes blowing all over Fields & Co in this short were probably corn in disguise ... corn, corn, corn, was what WC delivered all the way! Not the rhetorical, bombastic Fields at his best, but I did find the scene with the dachshund ludicrously misplaced in a huskies sled team amusing. The Fatal Glass of Beer was possibly a remake of a long lost 1916 silent.

The funniest thing I've seen in a long time! The dachshund was so funny--just plain silly. Tickled me to death. And when Fields can't listen to Cheaster the son at the dinner table without cracking up himself, that was the best! I don't remember him breaking up in a scene elsewhere.

As for the fake snow, it was always said to be instant potato flakes, but I don't know if they had those in 1933. For the last 50 or 60 years, it's been instant potatoes I know that. There are stories of giant messes when they get wet.... This scene with him getting belted with the fake snow every time he said "beast" just killed me. This is a great short!

I'm wondering if Fields was laughing or pretending to cry with his son.

reply

I thought he was sniggering at the very first of his breakdown but he was sobbing after the initial spurt. I still don't know if that was intentional or if it was genuine corpsing.

I had to look up when instant potato flakes were first manufactured after reading your post. Apparently they came into being in 1954.
