Did Blondell's character have herpes?

In the drunken booth scene she has a massive discolouration on her lip like she has herpes, which I assume was around then. Blondell's character was a loose girl and I thought this may have been one of the cautions they threw into the film about her lifestyle.

It looked too obvious a blemish for the cameraman, director or makeup artist to have missed and let through.

I thought her lipstick was smeared. She had just laid a big smooch on Grant Withers.

reply

That's what it had to be. They wouldn't bring herpes into it. And they wouldn't make her look intentionally unglamourous.

reply

Yup, lipstick. Withers had her smeared on his lower lip too. Then, the next second, they were both magically cleaned up.

And after Withers playfully slaps her, the look of disorientation on her face was so adorable. I bet Goldie Hawn was influenced by her.

The heavy-handed moral messaging was still in its infancy at this point - a handful of rules more winked at than followed. I don't think herpes-as-consequence came into play here.

Nothing to see here, move along.

I thought her lower lip looked swollen and wondered if someone/something had given her a fat lip but they just had to film anyway. Still cute and funny though.
