What does the Chinese man say to Sam Spade?

After Archer is found dead, a Chinese man says something in Chinese to
Sam Spade, and Spade replies in Chinese.

Does anyone know the Chinese dialect and what they said to each other?

reply

I don't know what he said verbatim, but I presume it's regarding Miss Wonderly being at the scene when Archer was killed. The newspaper article seen near the end of the movie discusses Spade bringing a Chinese witness to the court during Miss Wonderly's trial.

Newspaper clipping at the end explains it. Paused now, copying:

showed the effects of that.
Samuel spade, private de-
tective, caused a sensation at
the trial when he produced Lee
Fu Gow, Chinese merchant,
the only eye-witness to the
Archer killing, who positively
identified Mss Wonderly as
the Murderess.
The testimony of Lee Fu

So, that explains why they didn't caption it. Wanted to keep it from us until the end. Sam knew all along what was up much more than he let on.

It was Cantonese and he was saying that he saw the murder and would help Spade if he needed it. Seemed he was a regular informant of his.
