Better than Nosferatu

Murnau should be more known for this title, than Nosferatu. Faust is so much more enjoyable. Then again I was never big on Nosferatu. The visual effects were great, but not up to the quality as a whole like Faust.

I don't agree with your logic.

I own both on DVD.

1. Faust (Kino DVD, both versions, disc two is better.) 10/10
2. Nosferatu (Synergy Ent. extended cut.) 10/10

Both are by the same Director so it's easier to compare em.
I'll go with Faust! The imagery was wonderful as was Nosferatu but Faust certainly stands out.

The editing in Nosferatu is just plain terrible! Faust not only has better editing but better special effects and it a better film altogether!

Well my favorite Murnau film is The Last Laugh. To me that has the single greast performance in a Marnau film (Emil Jannings of course), and I also find it at least as visually interesting as Nosferatu or Faust if not more so. The dream sequence and the various shots of Jannings' face are just such memorable images.

Faust would probably have to come in third of those three films for me, though that's no disgrace on it at all, I just prefer the other two and only slightly so. My main complaint if I had to give one is that the middle act just doesn't live up to how great the first and third acts are.

Nosferatu was much better. Faust was ok in one way, but also very confusing.

I'm quite sure Nosferatu got a part of the votes cause of "Spongebob". Some Nosferatu scenes were featured in Spongebob and also in other movies. Nosferatu was also one of the first horror movies (not saying it's the 1st). That's perhaps why it's so popular. But while Nosferatu is very good, it appears to be the 2nd worst Murnau movie I watched (in my opinion). Faust, The last Laugh and Sunrise were all better. Faust was very good (in my top 40). The Last Laugh is a real masterpiece (in my top 30) and Sunrise is the best silent and the best Black and white movie I ever watched (#2 of all movies to me). Look at the votes on the other movies. None of them would even have a chanche to get into the top 250. Not any with more then 25.000 votes. However in terms of Sunrise the Rating (8,3) is high enough."The Last Laugh" would also have a chanche with 8,0. Fuast is very close too with 7,9. I guess Nosferatu has so many votes in comparison to the others cause of the features in other movies and TV shows.

In the end I'd say all Murnaus movie deserve to be more known.

Edit: I actually checked. And I found out why the ratings are so low (yes most are still underrated in my opinion):
Faust: 9% 1's
Nosferatu(although it's perhaps not underrated): 3,3% 1's
Sunrise: 4,7% 1's
The Last Laugh: 7,7% 1's

All just for the hate on silent movies. I don't think anyone who rated a 1 likes silent movies and just gives it straight hate.... (most likely without watching the movie)

Tabu (which is way less known. But the worst Murnau movie I watched. It's still really good. Not saying that) has only got 0,5% 1's cause there were no people who generally hate silent movies.

I think thats a real joke. Why 9% 1's for Faust?

Lets go with the Imdb Staff ratings:
Faust 9,0
Sunrise 9,2
Nosferatu 8,2
The Last Laugh 9,5

Compared to the imdb top 5 (imdb staff ratings)
Shawshank 9,0
The Godfather 9,4
The Godfather part II 9,0
Pulp Fiction 9,3
Good Bad Ugly 8,6

The ratings are influenced by hate from intollerant people. You should bind them to a chair and let them watch the 3 hour long Intolerance(1916).

However one thing is weird: I thought Faust was more exicting then Nosferatu why so much hate on Faust? Wouldn't the excitement be that what the people would like?

I'd definitely say Faust is a better quality film than Nosferatu, though I couldn't say I like one over the other. Murnau must have become a much more experienced filmmaker in the 4 years between the two, because Faust is excellently composed and cut and flows with a fluidity that Nosferatu lacks at times. I love both though, and neither's cinematography falls short of awe inspiring.

I'm gonna' give those movies you mentioned a look Tobias. I never said "hate" when it came to the silent genre, I'm quite the silent movie lover. Faust started off really good but I kinda' got lost. I never mentioned the seventh seal, I loved that one.

Interesting post. Those Murnau films are obviously very important and influential in film-making. I wonder if all the 1 ratings are because kids, who prefer the big budget action movies of today, need to watch/study these movies for a film class.

I love Nosferatu, I think it's a masterpiece (a flawed one, definitely, but still a masterpiece) and the vampire movies that came after would be completely different without it, but I like Faust even more. The direction, while it was great in Nosferatu, is even better here, and I was just entranced by Faust. Even the middle section, which is what most critics say is the slowest part, still intrigued me, and the last 30 minutes I was blown away by the sheer beauty and emotional significance of the imagery I saw on the screen. I love both films, but I ADORE Faust.

I actually have to agree. Though I love Nosferatu I strongly favor his Faust. He's the only one to adopt, to any capacity, the bulk of Goethe's Faust, parts 1 and 2. I wish someone else would. Most are too cynical to allow poor Faust to have his redemption at the end. This one wasn't afraid to do that. And I loved the humor yet menace in Mephisto.

I'm going to disagree. I really liked Faust up to and including the flight to Italy, but after that it got kind of dull. Nosferatu may not be nearly as impressive from a technical/special effects standpoint but I like its story line much better.
