The natural towers in our image are made of soft tuff, formed from hardened volcanic ash. Beginning centuries ago the people of Uçhisar in central Turkey dug innumerable caves into them. They used these caves as sheltered homes, churches, even entire underground communities—some are still occupied, others have been converted to hotels. The landscape we see here is in a parkland full of 'fairy chimneys' on the outskirts of the city center.
