How can an intelligent creature like homosapiens believe in "gawd"?

I can't remember a time when I believed. I was questioning the whole Christianity shtick throughout elementary school, and had dismissed it as a crock of shit by my tweens (my parents forced me to attend church till I turned 16). I read translations of other holy books and found them to be equally laughable and antiscientific.

It's depressing that so many people around me dedicate so much of their lives to a nonexistent sky pervert. It's basically a mass psychosis to which I cannot relate.
