Yess i am so ecxited to see this and i am so happy that IFC didn't pick it up

reply

Thats good news

reply

Glad to see a distributor. I didn't see on the link when the release date is but it's probably a bit early since they just got the film. Thanks for the info. :)

reply

No release date yet! But they are planning a summer theatrical release !! And welcome:)

reply

While I wasn't particularly thrilled about Saban Films distributing Lizzie, like the last sentence in the article mentioned, they will be partnering with Roadside Attractions for a theatrical release of this film which has my hopes up pretty high. If Kristen or Chloe's performances are Oscar-worthy, this could be the vehicle to get them there as Roadside Attractions has distributed films such as Winter's Bone, Biutiful, Albert Noobs and Manchester by the Sea, films with at least one acting Oscar nom a piece.

Since we're on the topic of film distributors, I just hope a company like A24 picks up JT Leroy, as they distributed and produced films such as Lady Bird, Moonlight, Room and Ex Machina to name a few.

reply

Yeah same about A24 i am just glad Lizzie wasn't picked by IFC

reply

Agreed, it will be interesting to see how strong the roles are for Kristen or Chloe in this film. I enjoy seeing some good, in depth characters and character development.

reply

Yeah exactly!! Same i am so excited to see how the story will be unfolded and the performances

reply

Most of the critics who submitted reviews thus far have good things to say about the performances while most aren't particularly fond of the storyline other than the murder sequence. So far Lizzie has a 69% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

reply

Sounds like very good critiques about the actor performances, but less so on the movie itself. I didn't see the film up for any awards in Sundance but I might have missed it as I only saw one article so far.

reply

Although it hasn't won any Sundance awards, distributors seem to think it was good enough to pay a pretty penny for according to The Wrap:

After a huge bidding war for the ax-murderer period drama “Lizzie,” starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, Saban Films acquired the North American rights in partnership with Roadside Attractions.

These distributors putting their money where their mouth is speaks volumes considering that most indie films nowadays go direct to streaming services like Netflix. A major reason for this can be blamed on the decline of moviegoers since the advent of digital cinema projection, as they can view a film in comparable quality on their UHD HDR TVs--so we can be thankful Lizzie will make it to the big screen--although I doubt it will get a wide enough release to reach Hawaii. Not really a problem as I can likewise watch it later on my 4K TV.

Agreed, good point. I'm thinking this film will find a good niche among viewers given the topic and the take the studio took on the story line. This is a good article from Chloe's point of view, the Lizzie Borden story being one she had wanted to make for a long time. Reminds me a bit of Kristen's and other cast members of that film similar desires and drives to see the "On The Road" book turned into a movie.

More crushingly, some of the development surrounding Lizzie and Bridget’s affair was left on the cutting-room floor. As we see it, their flirtations are sensual but clipped.

“It was very hard,” Sevigny said about learning those moments weren’t included in the film. “I was like, ‘If you have another scene with Kristen Stewart and you don’t put it in your movie, you’re stupid. What’s your problem?’ But almost every movie goes through that. Almost everything that was on the page was filmed, and a lot of it didn’t make it in the movie. And more stuff with me and Fiona Shaw. There was more to the relationships that made them more complicated, and also then informed why Lizzie [commits the murders]. Now it’s a little more vague than what Bryce and I intended originally to do.”

I'm wondering if the scenes of Kristen which didn't make the final cut were deleted because they were too controversial in a sexual sense. Hopefully, these edited out scenes will be included in the bonus materials when this film is released on Blu-ray so I can have a better idea of why they were cut out. Judging by what Sevigny stated, it seems these scenes would have fleshed out the inner workings of the characters in a more meaningful way.

Film critic Sara Stewart of the New York Post got word of this article--I know this because she quotes the exact same words from the Huffington Post article you provided the link to verbatim:
https://nypost.com/2018/01/30/lizzie-is-a-chilling-violent-reimagining-of-lizzie-bordens-senseless-murder/

I doubt Sara Stewart has access to those deleted scenes, yet by her tone she speaks as if she knows something integral to Lizzie's storyline which should have been there was purposely left out. Unfortunate because Kristen is a critics darling and they are very much aware of what she can bring to a role and they will unabashedly defend her if they feel she is being shortchanged even if it means taking it out on the director and the film as a whole by giving it a negative review.

I myself ain't a big fan of gratuitous and senseless violence--that's why I detest most horror/slasher films. On the contrary, if there is some sense to the violent acts being depicted in the film, I'll put up with it as a means to a more fulfilling end. Sure hope Lizzie is the latter, not the former.

No one will see this movie anyway

I agree. I'm not a big fan of most slasher films either but if it makes sense with a decent story line and characters it's a better take for me.

I saw that Chloe talked about scenes being deleted. I know that happens in any film as the director makes decisions on content and length of film, but it seems the deleted scenes were perhaps more important to the film, at least in Chloe's view. And Chloe would seem to have the insight as she has worked very hard to get this film made.

Here's an article I thought was interesting with regard to deleted scenes in films which should have made the final cut, which applies to even some of the most popular movies of all time:https://screenrant.com/best-movie-deleted-scenes/

Interesting because most of them rank very high on my fave films of all time list. Interesting also because every single one of these examples, except for the last one which referred to a deleted scene revealing Wolverine's iconic yellow suit, were scenes that were integral to fully understand the motivation of a character and how key characters related to each other in the film. And despite all these films being in the action-adventure genre, there was no mention of deleted action scenes, showing that regardless of the film genre, scenes depicting a key character's motivation is integral to a story.

Chloe's reason for voicing her concern over the deleted scenes involving Kristen too was likewise, in her opinion, integral for a viewer to understand a key character's motivation, in this case, Lizzie's motivation for committing those heinous murders. I'm guessing this is because failure to understand why Lizzie committed those unspeakable murders would come across as senseless violence to a moviegoer as I mentioned earlier.
