Has the 'Charlie's Angel' "rumor" been confirmed?

Just read a Variety article regarding Elizabeth Banks and a project called 'The Paper Bag Princess,' where I came across the following sentence near the end of the article ...

'The Paper Bag Princess' with its strong heroine also sounds like a match for Brownstone and Banks, both of whom are backing female driven films and shows, such as the upcoming 'Charlie's Angels' with Kristen Stewart attached as one of the crime fighters.

Thus I wonder whether this is confirmation that Kristen has actually signed on to be in the film.

And now, as I usually do, I believe that it's time to close this post with a song.
And yes, it does relate to Kristen's career in a way.

So sing it with me ...
"This is not some Bible, like 'On the Road'
Oh no
It's just a song about coming home"

While the following isn't an official confirmation, Kristen is cast for the role according to this production status update issued by Elizabeth Banks' film outfit Brownstone Productions: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DNjQoRjW4AEisG6?format=jpg&name=large]

So even though it's not written in stone just yet, with Variety and Brownstone Productions both reconfirming that she is cast, sure makes it appear she is still attached and will sign onto the project.

Filming is supposed to start this Spring with a release date of Summer 2019 according to Variety. I haven't found any confirmation of the cast except the older news of Kristen and Lupita Nyong'o being sought after for two of the roles. Elizabeth Banks is directing the movie.

Yes Ron, still no official confirmation yet--all we have to go by thus far is the news from Variety as Carved stated earlier in his OP. That being said, I thought this piece written by film critic Scott Mendelson was quite interesting, especially if one is a fan of Kristen and Johnny Depp, as you and I are both and would have to agree that the timing for this project may be just perfect for her career trajectory, all things considered:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/10/02/how-charlies-angels-could-be-kristen-stewarts-pirates-of-the-caribbean/

It is intriguing that this news essentially dropped at the same time as news, courtesy of Variety, that Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot was trying to snag Kristen Stewart as one of its leads, along with (in a more speculative sense) Lupita Nyong’o. To state the obvious, big-budget action thrillers featuring female ensembles aren’t any less rare than they were when McG’s Charlie’s Angels, starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, earned $264m worldwide back in 2000. So, yeah, a Charlie’s Angels movie, along with WB and MGM’s Tomb Raider reboot, is automatically more of an event (at least for certain demographics) than the next Cliffhanger or a threatened Stargate reboot or The Crow. But even so, excitement around Charlie’s Angels will partially be based upon who ends up cast in the picture.

As for Kristen Stewart, the first thought that came to mind was “Captain Jack Sparrow.” Her doing Charlie’s Angels in the beginning of her career would have been merely a high-profile gig for a working actress. Her doing it just after Twilight wrapped would have been a way to keep her in the franchise limelight. But now, she’s essentially the queen of the arthouse scene taking a major lead role in an action movie based on a TV show. That’s not too far removed from Johnny Depp going from box office poison to Walt Disney megastar after Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Like Depp in 2003, there will be curiosity and interest in a very indie performer taking the lead (or a major supporting role) in a big-budget action fantasy popcorn movie.

It’s no secret that Stewart began as an indie actress, spent a few years doing Twilight movies (with a Snow White and the Huntsman detour and a few indies like Adventureland) and then went right back to doing indie flicks. The twist is that her increased profile led to said films getting more media attention as a result, with every new release unleashing deluges of “Hey, believe it or not, Kristen Stewart is a great actress!” blog posts. Sure, the likes of Personal Shopper, Certain Women and Camp X-Ray haven’t made much in theaters, but we’re at a point where proclaiming that she’s a terrific actress is about as controversial as arguing that Die Hard is totally a Christmas movie. So now, she’s an indie darling doing a wholly commercial action franchise offering.

I don’t know if Stewart’s Twilight fanbase still has any value since she hasn’t done much in the way of commercial cinema since Snow White and the Huntsman and Breaking Dawn part II in 2012. But this choice being made today means something entirely different than if it had happened five years ago.

Mendelson, by the way, sure appears to be a fan of Kristen as well as he stated in his review of Personal Shopper, "....she may just have to settle for being one of the best indie actresses of her generation, with an Oscar win merely a matter of 'when' and not 'if.'”

I like Mendelson's take on things about this possibly being a franchise character for her. I think the film has to be well received, written well with a good story line, not just another bash and slash. Kristen prefers a more intricate character in an action film so if this can live up to those expectations then all is good.

I tend to agree given the types of roles Kristen takes on. They're the kinds of roles that get good, positive attention and critiques as seen by so many of the critiques of her roles, especially for the last few or more years.

Latest info on the movie. Still not much about who/when but Kristen is certainly still very interested in doing it.

Link above is a video of Kristen talking about Charlie's Angels while at a Chanel event. I like also that she's still working with Chanel.

Director Elizabeth Banks has previously stated that she wouldn't be an Angel in the film, but Stewart and Nyong'o would give this reboot some serious acting talent in front of the camera, and we have a few ideas of who could join them.

So does this quote imply that Kristen or Lupita Nyong'o or both actresses won't be cast as an angel? The reason why I ask is that I do not recall ever reading anything previously regarding Elizabeth Banks saying that Kristen and/or Nyong'o won't be portraying one of the lead roles.

I find it funny that I've come across posters who actually thought Kristen was no longer with Chanel since she hasn't done a Chanel photoshoot for a few months--similar to how some say she no longer works in Hollywood since it's also been months since she last shot a movie. It's almost as if such ones expect her to act in back-to-back-to-back films and be the perpetually perennial face of Chanel like she's done in the past.

reply

It sounds like the film is somewhere in the decision process of whether it will be made, getting initial funding, etc. I'm thinking the film will be made. Elizabeth Banks will direct but not be in it, though I wonder if that'll change to where she has a part like she had in Pitch Perfect.

I think it was pretty clear that Kristen was still involved with Chanel as there have been news articles and other things happening. This was a bigger event and as I say, I'm glad Kristen is still involved since I feel it gives her more flexibility and variety in her work. It also gets her more involved with fashion which she seems to mix with her more normal or sometimes grunge type casual look.

Deadline recently stated clearly and specifically that Kristen has been shortlisted for a lead role, which I'm guessing is one of the Angels' parts, instead of merely a supporting role:

Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o are in talks for lead role in the film franchise that was originally led by Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu.

Makes one wonder what they're discussing as Kristen was in talks with Sony about a potential role in this franchise for 6 months.

reply

The preliminary news of being in talks for the cast has been going on for a while. I have to assume that they don't have the cast set yet, or that they mostly have the cast and news just isn't coming out. I kind of think that Kristen and Lupita are likely to be in the film, but that's speculation based on the info that's been coming out.

IMDb Pro (which I don't subscribe to) says that the project is currently in "rewrites."
I found this info on the main 'Charlie's Angels' page at IMDb.

I had also read awhile ago that April 22nd was the scheduled start of filming.
I wonder whether this is still the case considering that the 22nd is now less than one month from now and we have yet to hear any confirmation of anything, including the cast.

reply

Carved, thanks for that info. It looks like the studio wants to start shooting the film sooner than later so things seem to be going. We'll see, maybe more concrete info soon which seems likely given how close they may be to filming.

According to IMDb, Kristen and Lupita are still "Rumored" to be attached to "Charlie's Angels". Perhaps when this film begins shooting or is in postproduction, only then will we know for sure what is set in stone.

I'm now wondering if producers of this film have kept the casting of its lead roles so secretive despite the fact that production of this film is fast approaching due to some who are in opposition to her starring in this project, as if some in the industry want her blackballed from mainstream films so to speak. While I could be imagining this, I've read some very hateful and spiteful things said about her on various forums.

For example, on the comment thread of one of the video edits on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PONG3EzUqeg one poster in particular, vehemently opposes her being cast in this film. Some of the comments I felt I needed to delete because they were becoming increasingly venomous towards her and her agent and amounted to personal attacks. I'm guessing those who upload videos are expected to self-moderate them. While I initially dismissed this person as a troll, whoever this was seems to know her better than most of her fans do, almost as if this one possesses insider info. However, in hindsight, this poster was dead wrong about Kristen being dismissed from "Cali" and also wrong about her not being cast in "Charlie's Angels", perhaps he or she was just blowing off hot air for whatever reason. Thankfully the vast majority of people who post comments on the threads of my videos are either casual or diehard fans of her acting. Thanks to Kristen's fanbase, my amateurish channel finally has over a million views while gaining over 1,000 loyal subscribers.

I think if we recall the "haters" who seemed to just go after Kristen then perhaps we realize that some of these angry posts are from those same type people. They just hate on actors/celebs and expect everyone else to agree with their view of not liking an actor.

Remember that some of them were well so well known to magazine web sites that the site moderators would call them out for their hateful behavior and basically demean them for it. We saw some of this on the IMDB forums, not only for Kristen but for other actors/actresses also. So in conclusion, I tend to feel it goes with the territory of being an actor or celebrity.

That said though, I do wonder if Kristen seems to get more of it than many others? Reason being that she's more of an Indie actress and not the type to gain wide popularity for lots of big box office films which really garner more support for any actor anyways.

What I find odd is that such ones put so much effort into their hate, as if they've grown to love to hate certain celebrities. I recall one poster on Kristen's former IMDb message board who used to post comments containing 1,000 letters or more quite frequently. And I refused to go on any of the "Twilight Saga" message boards as the hate spewed against Kristen was off the charts. The reason why I brought up the example of the poster who left exhaustive and in-depth comments attacking Kristen on my YouTube channel is that the vast majority who leave comments on any YouTube video for that matter usually leave short and concise comments equivalent to a Twitter Tweet. So I'm thankful for sites like MovieChat, where trolls are much fewer and further between.

On another forum, I read a post that mentioned "Charlie's Angels" will begin filming in June according to Production Weekly. However, according to that same source, "Against All Enemies" and "Cali" will also begin shooting this summer, which appears to be a conflict in scheduling if she is to play a lead role in all three films. So perhaps one of these movies will start filming earlier in the spring or later in the fall in order to accommodate Kristen, maybe changing back to the April 22nd date, like you mentioned Carved.

While she's proven that she can act in multiple films per year, even superwoman can't be in three different places simultaneously. One theory I've come up with is she has a clone that will do stand-ins for her until the critically acclaimed Kristen whom we have come to know and love becomes readily available. Perhaps my other theory of her having a straight-as-an-arrow identical twin is more believable. While I admit these theories are a bit farfetched, it does explain why she was phenomenal in her performances in "Clouds of Sils Maria" and "Personal Shopper", roles which she has poured her heart and soul into and seemingly inefficacious in her role as Bella in "Twilight", yet who can blame her as she was getting into character of an undead vamp--almost as if two different actors starred in those movies, as most film critics seem to agree by way of their reviews. This would partially explain why some insist she's bisexual, while others claim her gay orientation is hardwired into her genetic code and still others, Robstens for example, allege she's heterosexual and always has been. All dibs aside, even as a longtime fan I admit I will probably never be able to figure out this fascinating, talented and mysterious woman. But one thing's for certain, Kristen will be very busy this summer, especially if she is simultaneously pursuing her fashion, screenwriting and directing career paths.
