Really sad to see this...I believe he played the slide guitar on "Freebird" and the lead on "Tuesday's Gone." Great player...but a sad reminder of how much tragedy this great band endured. They're all gone now. 😢

I was lucky enough to see them a few months before the plane crash, at a Day on the Green July 1977. One of the best concerts I ever went to.😎

Gary, Allen, Leon, Billy.....all the original members that survived the crash died relatively young. Armitus is the only one left now that survived the crash.

Wow, that is awesome...what a memory that must be for you! They've always been a great band live, from what I've read/heard...going to concerts back in the 70s wasn't like it is now, where they have the sound technology down to a science. From what I understand, it was very "hit and miss" back then...but LS always had the reputation of a great "live band."

I know he wasn't an original member, but Ed King was such a big part of the band as well and he's gone also. I read an interview with King in a guitar magazine years ago and he made an interesting observation about LS's music. I think he was discussing LS as a "Southern rock band," but King said the only thing that sounded "Southern" about LS was Ronnie Van Zandt's vocals. King said he thought of LS as a "blues band" and I think there's a lot of truth to that (I believe both Allen Collins and Gary Rossington were big fans of Eric Clapton, if I remember correctly).

Whatever you want to call them, they sure made great music. RIP, Gary Rossington.

I know he wasn't an original member

Actually, Ed King was an original member & had played on the first 3-4 albums. He also played Bass on the debut when Leon had temporarily left the band.

Oops! You're right, my mistake. I was thinking that Ed King was not an original member, because he played with the Strawberry Alarm Clock before joining LS. How great of a band was LS when Ed King is playing bass????? 😃

Oh, yes! 😃 You know, we were discussing David Lindley's passing the other night and I believe on the original recording of "Running On Empty" (i.e., before the song begins and you hear the audience), you can hear someone yell out "Freebird!" 😃 It's kind of poignant that Lindley and Gary Rossington passed away within a couple of days of each other.
