Imagining Martha

I got this flash of Martha in a future season, or at least an ep: Totally baller, with a hugely wealthy sugar daddy, a few younger lovers, dripping in fur and jewels, crystal champagne flutes and candelabras in her luxury apartment. Basically, she becomes hot American tail in Russia, basking in attention, and loving every minute of it. Clark who?

Love this..

I thought they would kill her and later tell Phillip she died in childbirth having his other son. . . .

I've always imagined her living a very miserable existence in the Soviet Union. She wasn't cut out for that way of life and she was never a true traitor so she'd just be a fish out of water. And with no family which she held dear.
I hope they follow up on her...and I hope they didn't feel inclined to off her as she was no threat. But she could be considered a loose thread.

I'm only on the end of season 3 on Amazon. Martha is a very compelling presence. A true victim. I'm looking forward to see how this plays out.

I can only agree. Not speaking the language and I don't see her ever getting adjusted to living there.

reply

No way to better learn a language than full immersion.

reply

Sadly, judging by what happened to Kim Philby and others in the past, full immersion in alcohol is the likely outcome.

reply

Then at least she'll have access to tons of cheap vodka.

reply

Not for too long once Mikhail Gorbachov becomes leader he imposes heavy increases on alcohol to try curb rampant alcoholism

reply

At least we know from history that she wouldn't have been killed, even her life would have been miserable.

I kind of didn't understand why they wouldn't just kill her, instead of flying her to Russia and supporting her for the rest of her life.

(Tho maybe that wouldn't exactly encourage other people to volunteer for spying, if it became known?)

I would love to see a spin off, 'Martha in Moscow'

Martha was eerily calm during the Casablanca goodbye scene. I imagine her months later as pregnant and miserable, waddling around in a tiny 6th floor flat. Fully cognizant of how cruelly Clark/Philip had used her now, she seethes with anger and plots revenge.

Hopefully we haven't seen the last of Martha.
