When Will Bro-Country end?

For the last 7 years or so its about lets have a party, chillin' in a pick up and then references to Joe Diffie. Its gotten so repulsive that I can't listen to any Country station any more . When will real Country music make a come back? Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean , Deirks Bently, and Billy Currington are the worst offenders. I don't mind Luke Bryan as much, for some reason- he is tolerable. Even though he is guilty some of it too, he seems more authentic.

I wish we could better songs. Back in my day it was great bands like Confederate Railroad, Pirates of the Mississippi, McBride and Ride, Vince Gill, Suzy Bogguss, Reba, Garth, etc. Now its just trash.

I so agree, you took the words right out of my mouth. There are a few bro-country songs from the 80s that are pretty great, believe it or not. I LOVE Fishin In the Dark by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, even though it's pretty bro-country but I just like the music and their voices. Even the Osmond brothers did a country album in 1983 and I think 1985 as well. I found this out from my aunt who is a huge Donny Osmond fangirl. I find it pretty decent, lol. It's because they're from Utah. Nitty Gritty also did Mr. Bojangles in 1970. lol I love it.

And I think Alabama is a great example of country music as well. I don't know all their songs but almost all the ones I've heard don't have to do with that country stereotype, just fun. Mountain Music, If You Wanna Play in Texas, I'm In a Hurry (And don't know why) When We Make Love (yes it's a love song), Song Of the South, Roll on 18 Wheeler are my top tracks. I remember when I'm In a Hurry was a new song in the fall of 1992.

I'm not sure if Creedence Clearwater Revival would be considered country but it's more southern/swamp rock. Most songs I've heard by them are just about life down in the Louisiana Bayou and that makes it easy to listen to. I cannot listen to the Eagles. Only songs I can tolerate by them are Hotel California and I think Take it Easy. Travis Tritt did a cover in the mid 90s and that's how I first heard that.

It's very hard to listen to most country today. And some people may have thought the late 80s to mid 90s was the end of country but compared to today, they should love the stuff from back then. There are a few songs from the early 90s that I wouldn't even consider country like Why Haven't I Heard from You, T-R-O-U-B-L-E, and even Watch Me but Watch Me is a true favorite of mine. So is T-R-O-U-B-L-E. That song is fast, upbeat and even broke the record for largest line dance EVER at some festival in the mid 90s.

Well, I don't consider "fishin' in the dark" really Bro Country. Bro Country has a certain mentality to it that is very off putting. Its when they over do this thing about partying all the time and drinking beer and it becomes monotonous.

But I do like that song. Good point.

One of the first country songs I remember is Feed Jake. I think you mentioned something to me about that in another post. Red Solo Cup is pretty tolerable because at least it doesn't have to do with bimbos in tight jeans, like almost every country song today, but yeah it does have to do with drinking. A majority of songs on my playlist range between 1990 and 1993. Around 1994-1996 is when I don't have as many. I have a lot from the 80s as well. Runaway Train by Rosanne Cash is one of my favorites. I couldn't remember the lyrics for years but I finally found it a couple years ago. I remember hearing Old Hippie back in the early 90s as well. It may have been the 1995 version but I like the 1985 one a lot better. Remember Bop by Dan Seals? I used to think he was saying "I'm gonna bop ya baby," not "I'm gonna bop WITH you baby." I live in Western NY, far away from "redneck" town.

I thought Western NY is pretty rural and Country. I know many Country fans up there. More up there than down here in Virginia even.

I realize this post is almost two years old but I just had to comment on the hilarity of someone complaining about bro country and then applauding Garth Brooks, the man who butt-raped country music and left it to the bro country singers.

You know the answer: it won't end until people stop paying for it.

You need to just accept the way things are and enjoy the old stuff.

I understand this post is 5 years old, hasn't been posted in since the IMDb boards shut down, this board is pretty much dead, and you'll never see this... but god damn this is hilarious. You list those 4 guys as the worst offenders but you're okay with LUKE BRYAN? Holy shit did you miss the mark. He was bro country from day 1 and still sits on top the throne. Man that's rich.
