God: Yeah, it could be fake, but it would seem a bit odd for someone to impersonate a former IMDb employee for no reason, deep within a long thread on Reddit? It rang true to me, but of course, "reader beware."

I don't know, but I bet it was costly to administer the site and keep the place somewhere knowledgeable people wanted to go. I was an admin for a website that had maybe a zillionth of imdb's traffic and user complaints that really just amounted to personality conflicts were legion.

the same reason any big corporation does anything, money. though to be honest I wouldn't mind paying an anual small fee to use the boards

Also, IMDb tried to be all things to all people. It had a ton of awesome content, but it really didn't need ALL the boards it had. Maybe it just collapsed under its own weight.

negative (honest) reviews, random banter, some inapropriate comments (but HEY it's the internet.. lol) etc.

mostly bad reviews i think.
