Edge of the City is one of my favorites with Ritt making a fantastic film directorial debut!

Funny that the other active post here is on Elia Kazan - Martin Ritt is the anti-Elia Kazan.

Where Kazan gave into HUAC and made subsequent movies championing individuality against a corrosive society, Ritt was blacklisted and made nuanced, insidious movies on the culpability of one's resistance against an oppressive system.

Watching THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, MOLLY MAGUIRES, HUD - these are truly subversive movies where the lauded Kazan's movies now come across as hokey and simplistic (as good as they are).
