(SOLVED) movie about a sailor about to be executed and he tells the story about how he helped a man rescue his bride from pirates

I saw this on TV at least 30 years ago so this movie must be over 30 years old. It was from the 1980s or early 1990s. It takes place in the 1800s and starts with this man who is about to be executed. He tells a story that forms the bulk of the movie. A man on an island is about to get married but the island is attacked by these pirates who killed most of the people on the island and kidnapped the bride. They left some sort of special mark all over the island noticed by the fiancée of the bride. The leader of the pirates is shown in conversation on land with some sort of military officer. If I remember correctly, he tells the military officer something about being the king’s brother.

The man on the island tries to escape and is then picked up from the water by a ship. The captain of the ship is the man from the beginning of the movie who was about to be executed. The ship's crew helps the fiancé to find and rescue the bride in a big battle. The leader of the pirates ends up in the water and is then shown crawling up onto land.
