Meh. Better than the other two movies, but still not very good.

Honestly, if you saw the opening clip that was posted online you've seen the best part of the movie. While the fights are good and it delivers on the gore, everything else is not very good. I feel a bit ripped off considering this felt like a 2 hour prolouge building up to essentially what I thought this movie would be. There's a huge chunk in the middle that spends too much time focusing on the characters who are horribly written aside from Kano which really throws off the pacing of the whole thing. As a whole it felt like a really rushed movie that isn't going to do anything to help disprove the myth that you can't make a good video game movie.

From what I'm hearing from the critics, it's still not better than the 1995 version.

It's not.

I put it maybe a shade beneath the original 1995.

The original 1995 film wasn’t that bad when placed in the context of its time (it was before CGI developed further, before superhero movies became so common).

I saw the original 1995 film at the theaters with my family back when it came out. We had a good time.

There is a reason why they put out the opening scene out on the web as an ad for this film. It featured the best actor, it featured the best action sequence, it may have even featured a different director, given just how crappy the rest of the film was. You were scammed - we all were.

Agreed. The opening sequence was great and gave me high hopes for the rest of the film. Boy, was I wrong.

Movie was basically a prequel to the movie they should have made.... but they killed off all the interesting characters already. It was alright.

The original 1995 movie although cheesy captured more of the essence of Mortal Combat. The 1997 was complete garbage, and this one takes itself more serious then it's predecessors. I thought it was ok, but the 1st movie was more fun. The best thing about this movie was the feud between Sub-Zero and Scorpion. They should have done a lot more with that. Sub Zero was especially menacing, and fun to watch. The actors who played Sub and Scorp were the best. Kano was good, and everyone else kinda sucked in my opinion. Shang Tsung especially sucked. Cary Tagawa from the first film oozed charisma and intimidation unlike this new Shang who is just boring. Reptile was wasted, Goro was wasted. No Johnny cage either.

Obviously this is set up for a sequel which Cage will appear in, as well as many other of the missing characters. In the end I was not bored watching this. It was entertaining, but could have been much better

^Agreed.

I still don't understand the need for the Cole character. If they had completely removed him and his family (which was a girl who could have been his sister and his wife who could have been his mother neither of which served any purpose) and set more of a focus on Kano and Sonya as the leads I think it would have been better.

If they had set Kano and Sonya up as the leads with there current story as enemies and they both learned they were chosen for a tournament and had to learn to work together against a common enemy I would have found that more compelling. Then they could meet up with Liu and Kung with Raiden and learn more about the tournament from them. I would have set Liu and Kung as original chosen ones with Raiden training them for life to prepare for the tournament. So when they meet Kano and Sonya they kinda have to play catch up as the tournament approaches.

The outworld scenes were pretty pointless as well basically 1 min long intros of the bad guys. A lot of excuses of low budget going around but according to google they had 55M to work with and from what I've seen they spent most of it on CGI. The original had 18M (31M today) and it looked much better 25 years ago than this did.

I'm watching it now and You're right. It's entertaining enough.
