Top 3 DCEU movies?

This isn't one of them.

I'd go with:

1. Aquaman - very creative and fun, good action scenes, great visuals. I didn't love it the first time I saw it, but a rewatch really won me over.

2. Wonder Woman - It's at least great for 2/3 of the movie. The third act leaves something to be desired and feels stock, but everything leading up to the finale is quite entertaining.

3. Batman v Superman - It gets a lot of shit, but while I do think the film is problematic, it's still one of the more interesting DCEU movies and it reaches some real high points.

3. It was ok, other than that marthaaaaaa bit, which was an absolute rubbish reason for bruce to start and end a fight. 🤣

reply

I want to see the Ultimate Edition. Supposedly it fills in some gaps in the plot and makes the film overall more coherent.

reply

1. Wonder Woman
2. Man of Steel
3. Aquaman

reply

aquaman was the only one that was decent enough because of Momoa & CGI.

The rest were all below average so they wouldn't even reach a top score.

reply

C'mon man, the first Wonder Woman was not below average. It was a good film, even if not quite a great one.

reply

To me, It was it was long and boring, the cgi/effect's were poor and the third act was terrible, the only thing decent about it was Lucy Davis comedy and some Steve Trevor scenes - but if you watch it without thinking it's a great first female superhero movie then you would see its actually not a good movie.

reply

As I mentioned before, I think the first 2/3 of the movie are very good. I agree it runs off the rails a bit in the final act and becomes kind of dull, but everything up to about the point where Trevor dies is very well done.

reply

If that's what you think then that's good for you and you can carry on enjoying it.

To me i only believe what i see and like and in my eyes it was a below average movie and no matter how many other people love it that's no concern to me.

reply

1. Wonder Woman
2. Shazam

I haven't seen Aquaman. I watched Justice League and Aquaman was my least favorite character.

reply

I'd say give it a shot. Aquaman is a lot of fun. Like I said, it took me two views to fully appreciate it but I now own it on 4K Blu-Ray.

The visuals are outstanding, Mamoa does well, the action scenes are pretty good, and even Amber Heard is good in her role. Overall, the film just has a lot of upbeat, fun energy.

reply

Agreed.

1.WW: 8/10
2.Shazam: 8/10
3.Man of Steel: 6/10

The rest of DCEU is 5/10 or worse. Aquaman wows with special effects but is a terrible movie.

reply

What makes Aquaman "terrible"? The story is coherent. The action is pretty good. The visuals are great. It's a lot of fun.

I cut/paste my post from the Aquaman board from a few years ago to save time:

I went in expecting it to be "OK to great" based on the overwhelming opinion average. Turned out to be a little below OK. To say it was a mashup is an understatement. It's like DC got tired of their movies being called bad and decided to copy movie parts that have proven to work with audiences in the past and paste them all together with exposition glue. Sorta like a video game with button mashing interrupted by periods of rest to be told what the story is.

Visually, I enjoyed a handful of things. It certainly was big budget and wowed for its money's worth. I will even give Mamoa a bit of credit. He toned down the dude-bro thing a lot and even upped his game a little in the acting dept. This is not to say that he was "good," but just better. There were some fights that I enjoyed too.

The movie was overloaded with style cliches. From the face-zoom-glance-up to the now-yer-gonna-get-it guitar solo to the here's-the-special-move-that-will-win later on moment. It was very much a movie by the numbers but sadly with as little chemistry between scenes as there was between Arthur and Mera.

I think of DC as a cook weary of people disliking his meals. He says "I'll show you! I KNOW you like chocolate cake so I will put all of these ingredients to your favorite chocolate cake together in this bag and shake it up. Then, if you don't like it, it will prove that you have something against me because this is the secret formulae to what you like." Except it's just an uncooked bag of ingredients without any heat nor skilled technique. Expensive ingredients. Some even tasting good on their own. But in the end just a bag of uninteresting stuff that is NOT chocolate cake.

In the end, it is a mediocre movie. 4.5/10

EDIT: 2nd watch made me like Black Manta a little more but dropped overall grade to 4/10

reply

I like that chocolate cake analogy, now I'm hungry for some.

What superhero film would you consider as a properly baked chocolate cake with all the right ingredients?

reply

None are perfect but the ones I'd rank highest are:

Watchmen
Captain America Winter Soldier
Spiderman 2
Iron Man 1

honorable mention:
Guardians of the Galaxy 1 (ruinous end ""fight"")
Wonder Woman 1 (horrid finale)

reply

Well, that's at least a thoughtful assessment. I'll give you that.

As I said, I was iffy on the movie the first time around. It's certainly not a perfect movie. I remember on that first watch thinking some of it felt clunky. But after giving it a second go, I found myself far more forgiving of its flaws and having a lot of fun with it. I think it's overall the most enjoyable and rewatchable DCEU movie.

reply

I ENJOYED THEM ALL...THAT SAID...THEYRE ALL VERY FLAWED AND MEH REWATCHES...A TOP THREE AND A BOTTOM THREE ARE INTERCHANGABLE.🤔

reply

No, man. Aquaman and Wonder Woman vs Justice League and Suicide Squad is not even a contest, it's a mauling.

reply

SUICIDE SQUAD IS EASILY MY FAVORITE SO....YEAH.

reply

Shazam
Aquaman
Man of Steel / Wonder Woman tied for 3rd for me :)

reply

1. Wonder Woman
2. Aquaman
3. The Batman warehouse fight from Batman v Superman (I’ll just pretend it’s a self contained short film)

I find Wonder Woman probably the most rewatchable, even though I don’t think Gal is a very good actor and the it leaves a bad taste in your mouth with that awful final fight.

Aquaman has the best action and CGI but the story just isn’t good enough for it’s overlong running time, I think if they could have cut 30 minutes it would have been much better.

reply

I agree that Aquaman is quite long--probably a little longer than it really needs to be--but I think it's overall the highest-energy, most fun DCEU movie we've gotten so far. And also the most rewatchable.

As you say, Wonder Woman falls apart at the end, and that's consequently a black eye on the whole movie even though the first two acts are really good. Aquaman, however, is consistent from start to finish.

reply

I'll go with Aquaman, Wonder Woman and er..

I actually like DC characters more than Marvel ones but this is hard just coming up with three!
