There is not a sympathetic character in the entire show. Not one! Every single person is a scoundrel. So it's no wonder people got tired of the show. It was fun to watch but at the end of the day you'd like to have someone you can root for.
You know why it was cancelled- why would you even watch it if you felt like that. Best show ever, should never have been cancelled. Go and watch some stupid fairy tale show where everyone is nice and loving - ugh!!
It suffered from low ratings not because there were no sympathetic characters (people love shows like that if the characters are well developed and interesting. SEE: Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Dexter, the vast majority of characters on Game of Thrones, etc.). The Borgias was just never promoted sufficiently. When I mention The Borgias to my friends, the vast majority of them have no idea what I'm talking about - and most of them work in the theater and film industry! A few vaguely recall ads for a historical show about a pope but they aren't actually sure what it's about, and assume it's a dull, slow-moving show about religious history.
On the other hand, everyone knows about Game of Thrones and has been told it's spectacular even if they haven't watched it themselves. The Borgias suffered because no one knows what it's about, or even that it exists!
Perhaps as opposed to not being sympathetic, the general audience just did not find the characters interesting. Fans of the show will argue "oh everyone was interesting" but the general audience did not tune in, they were too busy watching Game of Thrones.
They didn't air in the same time slot. This came on after GOT. I think people had to recover, or go socialize about each GOT episode after it aired, so they probably didn't notice Borgias.
The show was cancelled because by midway thru the third season it was boring and predictable. The Borgias won every time. And it wasn't so bad that they always won, it was the ridiculous deux ex machina way they did every time.
Micheletto happens to reveal he remembers every shape he ever sees right before he happens to easily discover the coded letter hidden under the floorboards. He is able to replicate every word in the letter for Caesare to easily decode and figure out Catarina's plans.
The new king of Naples happens to be dumb enough to allow Lucrezia to insist on giving the guards and the entire party magical sleeping power that puts everybody to sleep and allows them to escape the city untouched.
Micheletto happens to somehow figure out that UNDERGROUND there is shallowness that will make the entire wall of Forli topple like a domino set.
Catarina Sforza, brilliant in every other episode, is dumb enough to try to hang herself in front of an army with guns that can easily stop her from hanging herself and take her captive.
And on and on and on. It just got too damn ridiculous. I was honestly tired of seeing Caesare win at everything. It was dumb and unbelievable.
The complete series of "The Tudors" brand new is lowest price $43 with free shipping on Ebay.
I remember joking that one of Henry VIII's costumes equals the whole annual budget of "Breaking Bad."
Sorry, but a movie studio used to make "prestige" films like literary classics and sure Oscar bets like "Mrs. Miniver" during WWII. "The Tudors" and "The Borgias" and "The White Queen" are probably projects people another generation from now will look back on and call "expensive prestige" series/miniseries.
I have to read several books before seeing "The White Queen" again. But I am looking forward to it and now know why people say "The Wars of the Roses is a fascinating part of English history." Most people don't want to read the books for "Game of Thrones," judging by the message board. I thought they were a waste of time, frankly.
A "Downfall" parody has Hitler saying after the "Red Wedding," "There are too many characters! I knew who these characters were!"
Don't give us that BS. Do you watch movies to be morally enlightened and cry happy tears? Well, I don't. I watch movies for entertainment, emotional or intellectual stimulus. This series was very entertaining, but they probably cancelled it for financial reasons: It was probably too expensive to make in relation to the amount of viewers. Or Jeremy Irons couldn't/wouldn't take on the role anymore, and you can't replace him as an actor.
Human kind is evil (and good, at times). Whether you wear blindfolds every time you see it in action or not, it's still there and isn't going to go away because you attempt ignore it.
Thank you MetalMiike! I cannot believe no one saw the main page that said the writer initially only wanted 4 seasons and couldn't go past 3 seasons. The other one that said people are fighting to get it back on - seriously? Some great fans there..it's over. It happens, just like The Tudors - 4 seasons was just enough and you want a series to end with the fans wanting more, not because it's worn itself out.
