I know why it was cancelled

There is not a sympathetic character in the entire show. Not one! Every single person is a scoundrel. So it's no wonder people got tired of the show. It was fun to watch but at the end of the day you'd like to have someone you can root for.

You may be mistaken with the other Borgia. The Showtime Borgia had wonderful characters and a lot of us are fighting to bring this show back!

reply

The other Borgia series was better and more factually correct. The other Borgia series also wraps everything up with the actors doing narratives pertaining to the legacy of the Borgias. One person that was incorrect was the actor that played Alessandro Farnese, he stated that Alessandro would later become Pope Innocent X, which is false, he becomes Pope Paul III. Pope Innocent X doesn't come around until almost 100 years later.

Both play on gray area, such as the incest. It was only rumored, no proof. There is also no clear accounting of who actually killed Juan Borgia.

You probably mean this video?

Actually Diarmuid Noyes( he played Alessandro Farnese on Borgia Faith and Fear) clearly said "Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III at the age of 68".

As for Innocent X( Giovanni Battista Pamphili), he was mentioned in the same vid but a bit earlier. Naturally enough, it was John Doman( Rodrigo Borgia) who's talking about him since Pamphili was Rodrigo's direct descendant through his older daughter Isabella Borgia Matuzzi( she was depicted in the "other Borgia" series as well).

They were compelling characters because they were all scoundrels.

Rodrigo was corrupt as all *beep*. But he loved his family and rewarded loyalty.

Cesare was full of rage, but he loved his family, and rewarded loyalty.

Lucrezia was willing to maim and kill but for each person she gave them chance after chance to stop.

Micheletto was willing to kill without hesitation, but bit tore him up inside.. but he did it anyway.

Great characters, Sham Showtime stopped caring.

There was not a one-dimensional main character, and that's impressive.

reply

Did people get tired? I don't think a lot of viewers wanted it to end. There are other reasons for that than characters not being sympathetic.

As for the sympathetic characters that you want, remember that no one is flawless. Under scrutiny I don't think that anyone, especially with power, is pure good. (BTW, who decides what is good?) And this was about the infamous Borgia family, what did you expect?

This series could hardly been done any better. It had interesting plots and characters, it had surprising twists and turns, it had love and passion, and it had people fighting for what they believed in.

This series is comparable to GoT in the way that characters realistically are not portrayed in black an white. It's not good VS evil, but shades of both in all the flawed characters.

It's kind of boring with all the standard victorious-good-guy movies from Hollywood.

reply

I doubt too many people that watched the show didn't enjoy it. The problem is we must have not existed in sufficient numbers.

reply

The characters are sympathetic and quite lovable, but I think most people watch with their tragic downfall in mind (because of the historical context). It's also a show where you can grow to love the antagonists like Catherina Sforza and della Rovere because all the main characters are multidimensional and they all believe in their own causes.

And no one actually wants it to be canceled. I think the overwhelming majority would like another season.

As lovelylady pointed out, every character - not only on this show, but generally speaking - is written with a set of goals that they perceive is right. So none of the characters on this show are technically bad, nor do the see themselves as such. Most of the bad stuff that happens on The Borgias is usually a retaliation to some kind of treason -- nothing 'evil' takes place unless a situation calls for it. The point I'm trying to make: you won't find a movie or a television series that isn't applying the same kind of tactics that Neil Jordan used on the original crime family. Because if that really was the case, having no one to root for, then HBO's Game of Thrones would be canceled right along with it.

Rubbish! Murders and rapes and pillages don't happen by accident. Every single character is a scum bag.

Also this description which I originally thought was inaccurate is actually right on the money:

"The saga of a crime family in 1492 Italy. "

You´re kidding, rigth???

reply

So? Because they've done some bad things (usually for the survival of their family), they are in no way shapr or form sympathetic?

Not to Godwin this but during WW2, the Allies carpet bombed German cities, killing thousands of civilians, with no military targets, and yet the Allies are widely regarded as the 'good guys' of the war.

reply

Zkyire.....what a selective take on history you have. Try broadening your reading. Germany BLITZED England many many times bombing cities without troops. And those Poor Germans? Oh yeah, those pesky little concentration camps where millions died for....oh, for living I guess. Public school educated I see. And if you want to refer to the Germans as the "good guys", have at it.

reply

They were civilians killed none the less. I mean personally I feel its justified but sometimes its necessary especially in war...blah blah. I think a better case for his argument would atleast be Hiroshima and the questioning of if it was really necessary to kill thousands of civilians for them to actually surrender.

Back to the point...I believe the characters on Borgias are definitely relatable on the level of family and loyalty like the previous commenter stated.

Oh my god your ignorance is dispicable.

Both sides in WW2 carpet bombed each other. The USA dropped incendiary bombs in Germany and Japan that killed thousands of civilians, not just killing them but creating giant firestorms the likes of which the world had never even seen. England and the USA did this exact thing, everyday, for years.

Every country involved in WW2 committed atrocities. No one involved could possibly be considered 'good'. But that's life. And that's why whoever made this thread is 12 years old. It's too bad no one told the OP to go to his room while the grown people watch tv for grown-ups.

Are you 12 years old?

You guys are falling for the spin. Look beyond that at the actual actions of the characters and you'll see that they are all murderers, rapists and perverts. There is not a single good character in the whole damn show!

reply

Oh shut up.. Rapists and murderers are my kind of people :)

reply

First of all... Juan was the only rapist, okay! No need to pain with broad strokes on that one.

And second, murderers and perverts make for the best characters. Embrace it.

reply

It should have at least one more season. Now it's not the whole story.....

reply

So.... People only watch shows in order to admire and respect characters who are 'good and true' and always take the proper action?

Bad behavior and antagonism are the heart of drama. Remove them, and you've got.... Nothing. Sunday school plays.

Of COURSE they're all bad.... It's a show about the freakin' BORGIAS.

'Gosh... I'm not watching that show about the Nazi hierarchy... They're all yucky!'

I mean... c'mon.... Of course they're 'bad'. I don't watch the show to receive moral instruction from it's fictionalized characters, ffs.

reply

That's how I feel about The Vikings...not a single likeable character and really draggy story.

But The Borgias....they're great.

reply

WATH???????????????? You are talking abaut "The borgias" from Showtime????
