Was anyone else disappointed at the Barbie and Ken dynamic? (spoilers)

I thought that Barbie and Ken really were going to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Even if they didn't end up together in the end, I thought we were going to see them in a relationship like the dolls were. But instead, it was just Ken pursuing Barbie and Barbie brushing him off. Even when they were in the real world together, I thought they were going to act like a team. But instead, he was just an accessory. Aside from the dance scenes at the end, I was surprised that Ryan Gosling was happy playing a role like this.
