Biggest hole ever!

I enjoyed this movie but the HUGE hole at the end really pissed me off and hurt the overall movie experience. It makes NO sense that Jack Bonner would take the money and leave. He was the captain of a boat where 20 some old people died at sea with him being the ONLY survivor. He would be in jail for a very long time. The only argument that might make ANY sense is telling the cops he was forced... But then how would he explain his huge bag of cash and explain why he was the only survivor. Pretty lame.

That stood out as a plot hole: Jack was the captain of the ship; surely he'd be held responsible for the deaths of 35-40 elderly people who went down (actually up) with his ship. And then the outrageous wad of cash on him? He would've surely been held responsible if for no other reasons than the family members would need a scapegoat.

I don't get it either. He had no family, no friends, his career was almost over anyways, and he said, "I ALMOST BOUGHT A TICKET?!" Why not do it, there's really nothing left for him on earth, but then again now he's looking like a wanted fugitive but in the sequel it's just glossed over and they were deliberately vague about how he evaded jail time.

Since the authorities didn't actually SEE HIM on the ship he could claim he was at home sound asleep when the whole thing happened. As for the money, he could spend it a little at a time to avoid attracting attention. It's an old trick.
