That resolution at the end was almost comedic. The villain ended up looking as an idiot when the cops arrived. The film starts failing when the van disappears with Hitch in it. Then Quid starts doubting whether she willingly went for Smith-or-Johnes. That made no sense. She was sincerely scared and suspicious of Smith-or-Johnes. No way Quid would normally think she was anything else but abducted. Then that part where he thinks she was moaning in the woods, mistaking the "just married" couple for Hitch and Smith-and-Johnes, is also daft.
