Really......striking matches THERE????

There is NO WAY I would be handling matches in a gasoline - doused apartment....especially if I were blind!!!! And, by lighting those matches, she was just letting him see where she was. She just needed him to tap to find out where he was, but what was the point of her intermittently lighting matches? If either of them actually dropped the match or flung it at the other person, the whole damn apartment
would have gone up in flames, and they would have died instantly.

The last part of the movie had some inconcievable scenes.

Let's be honest a real badass criminal like Arkins' charactor would never do many of the things he did, and allow himself to get stabbed by his own knife by a blind women.

She stabbed him with the kitchen knife.

If I remember as she was used to darkness and had a keen sense of hearing (remember she heard the girl who was silent on the stairs?.) So, she was lighting the matches to lure the guy into moving towards her so she could hear where he was, and then she went in for the kill. He didn't realize what she was doing.

If i remember correctly.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

That's all she had to threaten him with. He just killed Mike. She knew he wanted to do "evil" things. He was stronger, deadlier craftier than she was. Threatening him with this was the only thing keeping him from jumping her at any second. Without the real and crazy threat of burning him and the apartment, she wouldn't have stopped him.

Intermittent because the matches were lighting out. But if she didn't have a match lit and ready to do something crazy, crazier Roat could've easily got the jump on her.

THIS.

Yes, Susy was risking setting the whole place on fire, but she's standing opposite a man who is more than willing to torture, rape, and kill her. When she tried attacking him with the cane earlier, he easily overpowered her, implying she wouldn't stand a chance against him physically. The matches were meant to keep him at arm's length so she could get to the door and try to escape the apartment.

I get that he was going to kill her but where are you getting the rape from? I don’t recall anything like that in this movie whatsoever

reply

It's been a few years since I last saw the movie, but I had the impression rape was in his plan. Tho I can't give you a specific.

reply

He was dragging her towards the bedroom so it's not an unreasonable expectation. We know he was a sadist.
