shareIt's such a great song and Charley Pride was such a great singer. He was featured quite a bit in the Ken Burns documentary "Country Music" and came across so well.
Little bit of trivia...if I remember correctly, Charley Pride was actually a minor-league baseball player before he became a country music singer...talented guy.
He was also a regular on a weekly, country western, comedy/variety show called Hee Haw.

shareYes, it is so beautiful...and it's such a big "swath" of the eastern/southeastern part of the U.S. My dad was from southeastern Kentucky and my mom was from southern Ohio...such beautiful country (as you said), but so much poverty as well.
shareI remember a trip I took to Virginia once when I reached a point in the mountains where I was about to cross the state line and the sign there read: 'Welcome to Virginia, Virginia is for lovers.' That slogan and the landscape in front of me compelled me to stop for awhile, just so I could process that experience.
My dad was stationed in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky during one of his assignments and we lived just across the state line from there in Clarksville, Tennessee.
You've mentioned Ohio here today. One of my closest friends from high school wound up retiring in a town called Patriot, Ohio. Are you familiar with it?

It's not far at all from my hometown. I haven't been there a whole lot (It's one of those "Blink and you'll miss it" places), but I have been there. Yes, it's a beautiful part of the state. Good for your friend for retiring there!
Yes, I think Virginia and Kentucky are beautiful also. My dad was born near where "The Dukes Of Hazzard" was set (There actually is a "Hazard County" in Kentucky). I was there one time when I was a teenager...to attend my grandfather's funeral (my dad's dad).

Yeah, he did say it was small and that he had a nice country home there. I'm not sure how he chose that area but fishing has got to be one reason. He was a lifelong avid fisherman. I used to go on regular fishing trips with him, his dad and grandfather. Those are some fond memories. Ah, his being a fisherman would explain a lot! 😃 There are a lot of great fishing places in that area (people used to fish a lot for catfish in the Ohio River). Good for him!
shareYeah, catfish are abundant here also and we specifically went after them. After some reflection, I'm vaguely starting to remember he might have discovered that area through his wife and her background.
