Asking Again - Hong Kong Action Movie

In the '90s I saw a film from Hong Kong that ended with two cops talking about possibly working together. I think one was from Hong Kong, and the other from China, and one says something along the lines of "in 1997 we'll be working together anyway," referring to the pending return of Hong Kong to China. I think the movie up to that point had been a team up between the two of them.

Anyone know the film?

Take a look at the Police Story series of films. They're centered around Hong Kong police, but mainland China police are in some of the movies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_Story_(film_series)

reply

I've seen some of those films, but this was not a comedy, and it didn't have Jackie Chan in it.

reply

This sounds vaguely familiar, did it star Chow Yun Fat, or perhaps Danny Lee ? https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0497097/

reply

And was the cop from China a portly/chunky guy?

reply

I don't remember at all what they looked like. I saw this film about 30 years ago. A theater a few blocks from my apartment showed a different double feature of films from Hong Kong every Thursday for about a decade or so, and I'd pop in from time to time to watch the films. Some I remember very well, but about others, like this one and the other one I posted about, I remember only a single aspect. I believe they were both male, but other than that, nothing else. One may or may not have been Chow Yun Fat, who was in a lot of the movies I watched there, but I have zero recollection of that. I only remember the sentiment-- we'll be partners either way in a few years time.

I think I already answered this one on the old topic, but You probably missed it:

It is also on YouTube with English subtitles

I think I saw that, but that is not the movie I'm remembering. I've never seen Chinese Cop Out. I see how there is a similarity to the ending, where the officer says he hopes they'll see one another before 1997, but that's not the scene I recall. Thank you though-- I'll check this film out!

reply

I am sad that it is not the one, but good luck in future :)

It's long shot, but maybe "Mad Mission" with Samuel Hui? It was low-budget movie series:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084955/

It's something like Asian version of James Bond.

reply

Thanks for the suggestion, but that isn't the film.

reply

OK. I will search. Maybe something from long list Donnie Yen or Jet Li.

reply

Don't know who Donnie Yen is, but 100% not a Jet Li movie. This was a movie along the lines of Hard Boiled or Bullet in the Head, one of those Hong Kong police gangster action movies.

Maybe "Young and Dangerous 3" (1996)? It is about triad.
00:22:14 : Come on, since 1997 is arriving soon,
00:22:18 : if you take this home and
00:22:20 : worship it day and night,
00:22:21 : you won't be arrested by cops, I swear
00:22:23 : Family necessity

It is long shot, but perhaps it is possible solution.

reply

Thank you, but no that it is not the film. :/

reply

And maybe "A Better Tomorrow III: Love & Death in Saigon" (1989)?

00:40:23 : What's the use of going back?
00:40:24 : In 1997 Hong Kong will return to China.
00:40:28 : We'll just have to came back here.
00:40:31 : Vietnam has been at war for so many years.
00:40:34 : The situation here is no worse than before.

reply

Not that film, either.

The film I'm trying to find ended with the two main characters talking before they parted ways, and that was their final conversation.

reply

OK. Are you sure that it isn't movie with Jackie Chan? I found something similar.
Police Story 3: Super Cop (1992)

01:32:40 : I'd love to get the money...
01:32:41 : but it belongs to the Hong Kong government
01:32:44 : No, it belongs to all China's people
01:32:47 : Let our Hong Kong Government hold it
01:32:50 : After 1997, we will also be China's people, and it will be yours, too
01:32:54 : No way

Second possibility is "Hong Kong 97" (1994).

Third possibily is "Biao jie, ni hao ye! (1990)
"Shapely mainland Chinese police inspector Cousin is forced to work with a Hong Kong cop, fighting against him almost until the end credits roll, when she reveals more than her Communist credentials."

reply

100% not Jackie Chan. I've seen Police Story 3, and it isn't that film.

I Googled Hong Kong 97 and an American film came up. Is there a Hong Kong version? The film I watched was made in Hong Kong, with all Chinese actors, in Chinese.

It's not Biao jie, ni hao ye! either. The film had two male police officers, and it wasn't a case of one being communist. This was a Hong Kong detective who had allied with a cop from China, and at the end, when they were saying goodbye, one remarked that after 1997 they'd be working for the same country.
