By expanding the problem to emotional immaturity, (the homosexual referrence was not entirely excluded as just enough vagueness was left for some implication), it allowed the lesson or moral to reach a larger audience.
Then you have the million dollar cast.
The most undersung is Carson who gives the performance of his career, in my opinion.
Next would have to be a tie between the astounding surprise of Austrailian Anderson and the delicious hate for Sherwood.
