No, no one would’ve attended Carlo’s funeral, he was not “made”. He was not part of the organization. Maybe just close family, and that’s it. Sonny’s death was a set up that Carlos admitted to. Likely a time was set and it would happen. If not that day, then another day. The beating by Sonny wasn’t the catalyst, rather Carlos was clearly a weak link seen by the Don’s enemies. He was used and manipulated to end the life of Sonny. Also, S4 of Ozark starts Jan 21. 🥳 Jimmy was boring and used as a conduit to the spin-off 6666. Waste of out time. This scene struck close to my heart and past. As a little girl living in a large city, with a grandfather who was well “connected”, I spent many Sunday afternoons seeing people dressed in their finest parade into my grandparents living room asking my grandfather for “just a moment of your time.” My siblings and I would leave the room and go to the adjoining dining room. I heard many conversations about beatings, fires and thefts that these people asked my grandfather to respond/rectify/retaliate to. Then after they left, we were allowed back into the living room while my father, uncles and grandfather would discuss the situations. I heard the words “loyalty”, “how much has he spent at our businesses”, “how connected is he?”, etc. My grandma was a leader in the city woman’s organizations organizations of my ethnicity. She was named Godmother to too many kids for me to remember. My father told me people did that in hopes of calling for help when they needed it. My dad nor my mom never agreed to be Godparents to anyone’s kids except close family members. So Bonsera’s daughter was a godchild of Vito’s wife. The guy likely disdained the Corleone organization. Now back then, the Italians, Greeks and other ethnicities generally lived in separate neighborhoods and patronized businesses owned and run by their own. So the Corleone's felt snubbed by this guy who felt he had no need for them. The possibilities are endless how he may have exhibited this. In his time of need, yes, he did go to Vito begging for help. Vito may have felt obligated because he felt a responsibility, to some point, to protect children and those of his ethnicity. There were many who received “favors” from my family not because they were loyal, but because my grandfather surmised it was for the better of the community as a whole. As a red headed Greek Italian, I smirk at your assumptions. James Caan had a distinctly masculine, aggressive, bold way about him that made him an excellent choice for the hot headed and violent Sonny Corleone. He embodied the role of Santino Corleone so well, many people just assumed he was Italian, the chestnut brown hair notwithstanding. Adam, read the book then go back and then watch the movie again. The intricacies within the family are important. The nuances that are shown and inferred hold the answers to the issues you don’t understand. The Godfather is a masterpiece. Coppola saw that The Godfather could be seen as more than just another crime story with the tired old moral, “Crime doesn’t pay.” Instead, he filmed it as a metaphor for the Italian immigrant experience in America. As the daughter of an immigrant who’s family was involved in Underworld crime, the film was stunning. Coppola wrote the book, sent the first draft and it was published without revisions. But as a film, with the enhancement of 1) Coppola’s insight, 2) Puzo’s revisions, and 3) Brando’s performance, not to mention Pacino, Robert Duvall, and others… it becomes positively Shakespearean in its feel. It feels like grand opera, with its eternal themes of family, loyalty, betrayal, revenge, and power. Except it’s realistic and believable. Great write up, you are spot-on with your analysis. 👏👏👏 Yes, Community is one of my favorites and I’ve binged a couple times on it. Peaky is a whole different animal tho. Peaky is a heavy drama with deep character development. Very tasty! If you’re looking for a “good show” try Peaky Blinders on Netflix. View all replies >
