I kind of liked that it was obvious, if only for the line at the end "Even your name is a dime store joke". It's kind of fitting that they portrayed the devil as playing another cheap trick on him that he overlooked until too late. I also hadn't heard of her before seeing this but was really impressed by her. Really great performance, and literally the only other thing I'd heard of her being in was Alita: Battle Angel which I haven't seen. I'm surprised she's 36 too, definitely looked younger. Hope that she gets some more great roles in the future. I can only imagine beyond the appeal of 'retro 90s' look and maybe a fondness for the era from the creators, having no access to things like internet and mobile phones etc makes the story more compelling or opens opportunities for plot devices like characters going missing or mystery around things? Also loved this show, so glad I found it. Very bizarre, but works in the show's favour with the context and setting, as well as the visuals. Here's my 2c about these things; Lisa - From what I remember the first time she barfed a kitten she was freaking out a bit, wasn't she? I only remember it becoming routine after she had done it a few times. Alternatively, the fact she was the descendant of the Jaguar Goddess maybe meant she already had some supernatural exposure or at least subconsciously wasn't as afraid? Roy - This is an interesting one, for some reason I thought that scene was partly in Lisa's imagination, and the wound in her ribs was already turned into the tattoo/healed over by the time her and Roy started going at it. Having said that, we didn't see anything to indicate it was an imagination, but I figured it must have been for Roy to not react to it. Mary - I thought that Mary's anger was partly justified considering that Lisa said she loved her and then essentially used her and dumped her immediately, even after the horrendous incident with the eye. Not only was she left in an awful state for the sake of the movie, but she seemed particularly angry when Code implied that Lisa never even mentioned Mary to him, she obviously was in love with Lisa and felt deeply betrayed. I think Gutman was very pragmatic and realised that Spade could be an asset to him later on, he did mention he had hoped he would accompany him to Istanbul for example. Probably also just showing how much money he actually has that he can spare $1,000 and not think much of it. I feel like Gutman was portrayed as a man who was very dangerous when crossed, but not particularly emotional or quick to violence. He was pretty ruthless in sacrificing Wilmer for example, and in having the ship captain murdered when it meant advancing his own needs. For me it was the end of that rambling dentist story. "What happened to him?" "The goy?" "Yeah!" "Who cares?" That 'Who cares' just popped me for some reason. Perfect end cap to that scene. View all replies >
