You may believe or not in Jesus as a God, but nonetheless the Gospel is a notable study in ethics and the working of the human conscience. So please note that Jesus Christ had harsh word for hypocrites and greedy people, but had understanding words for adulteresses. He would not have approved giving a hard time to the Redfield woman. He knew how the human mind works and that we are programmed for love; sometimes love simply cannot be resisted and brings you in a wrong direction even if you can’t help.
The full scenes are nowhere to be found, but a photobook by the stage photographer Ken Regan shows stills from scenes that were shot and edited out, and going back to the original shooting script it is not difficult to guess their content:
• the first dinner ends on a sour note and Robert leaves. Francesca would follow him but gets a sudden phone call from her husband. The original phone call was shot with intercuts between Francesca and Richard, in the final version we see and hear only Francesca;
• Francesca hears the sound of Robert's truck passing on the road and going to Roseman bridge at dawn. Her note is tacked to the bridge, but he does not read it immediately and puts it in his pocket. These scenes are in the film, but then there had to be a scene in which Robert goes back passing in front of Francesca's home without stopping. Francesca thinks that he has read her invitation and has rejected it, and is depressed; this is why she is relieved to learn that he was in a hurry because light was changing;
• after the diner scene, Robert enters the general store to buy some beers and the man at the cash register makes a detailed account of the Redfield-Delaney affair; this is why Robert says he heard so much about that affair;
• after the first night of lovemaking they are very hungry and have breakfast on the porch;
• when Madge suddenly arrives during the last day, she stays a looooong time and she talks a lot, Francesca is desperately trying to get rid of her;
• when Robert leaves the home and drives away, Francesca rushes after him him just to see the truck going. At this moment Robert stops the truck, gets out and they have a last hug. In this process, a button is torn from Francesca red dress and lost;
• coming back from Illinois the morning after, Richard finds the torn button in the lane and takes it; but he returns it to Francesca only a few days later, during the dinner after the rain scene. At this time Francesca is on the verge of confessing everything, but she does not.
