The whole car transaction didn't make sense to me. Whether the people selling the car were criminals or not, they didn't seem like neophytes. If Emily's guy knew that they would be found out in 8 minutes (the precision of which is also suspicious), then I think these sellers would too. And any legit car transaction would take more than 8 minutes. I see the similarity, but Jake started out in the film as a criminal steeling items to be sold for scrap. Yes, plaza's character has a criminal record, but for DUI and assaulting her ex. I was thinking of another film, The Next Three Days, where a husband slowly descends into becoming a hardened criminal when trying to get his wife out of prison (and interestingly, both films end in South America) Jewelry stores, like auto dealers, don't generally own their inventory. They basically have it on loan from the suppliers. So while it's possible he could still take the jewelry and try to pawn it, anyone he would pawn it to would probably be aware of the source and the fact that he doesn't really own it. Now the other question is why didn't the gangsters simply take some of the jewelry earlier rather than continuing to rough him up and chase him around. I suspect that it is what they were ultimately getting to if nothing else worked, even if they hadn't killed him. But it would be last resort. While valuable, the store wasn't Tiffany's so it would probably take a lot of jewelry being fenced to make up for what they are owed. View all replies >
