You Light Up My Life hit number one after 7 weeks. Impressive, but not a record; Elton John's Philadelphia Freedom hit number one after 6 weeks in 1975. Perhaps Debby Boone had the fastest rise at the time for a debut artist. (My source is top40weekly.com)
Most importantly, they did not have to cross the Brazos River at all. They started in Fort Worth and in episode 6 they crossed the Red River at Doan's Crossing, near present day Vernon TX. Only two significant rivers are between Fort Worth and Vernon, the Wichita and the Pease, and neither is as wide as the Brazos.

You raise an interesting point. In the common law of most English-speaking countries, there is no general duty to come to the rescue of another. Many civil law systems, which are common in Continental Europe, Latin America and much of Africa, impose a far more extensive duty to rescue.
In the United States, as of 2009, ten states had laws on the books requiring that people at least notify law enforcement of and/or seek aid for strangers in peril under certain conditions: California, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. These laws are rarely applied in the United States, and are generally ignored by citizens and lawmakers (see The Myth of Moral Justice by Thane Rosenbaum). Anyway Gotham City is a proxy for New York City, which has no duty to rescue law, so I conclude that Batman had no legal duty to rescue Ra's Al Ghul.

I just read Alone On the Wall and Alex did not cheat when he free soloed El Capitan. He did not grab any pegs or pitons during the climb. At one point he joined his finger and thumb within the loop of a carabiner that was on the wall, just in case his foot slipped, but he did not put any of his weight on it or use it to aid his climb. During another part of the climb he apparently used two fingertip wide piton scars (man made holes) to aid one particular move, but to my knowledge that is not against the rules.
