the most recent response from A. Hammer is that they are currently working on it and it's supposed to be unrelated to the book, ie the boys meet in 5 years and it goes from there..supposedly it will have an AIDS angle to it which i hope is not true since it will totally change the tone of the first movie. I actually hope it will focus more on Oliver's perspective since we've only really heard from Elio. Despite all the critical acclaim the movie only did so so at the box office so Im hoping that it will bring all the fans out and be a big success...ie CMBYN 3#!
man just saw this movie and missed out on a lot of good discussions! agree with your responses...Oliver and Elio were trying to make each other jealous in order to test the waters to gage each other's interest..right before the "she was even more beautiful than last year" comment, Elio was bragging that "we almost had sex last night"(he and Marzia) hoping to bring Oliver in..but Oliver wouldn't have it ("try again later")..but after it the comment later by the car Oliver was getting annoyed as it was clear what Elio was trying to do.
VandaQ i agree with u...Oliver is always "trying to be good"but gets drawn in by Elio..that's the beauty of this movie is that u feel that angst of them trying to resist but being overpowered by love.
i think Oliver is at heart always trying to be "good", ie lead a conventional life. we know from his allusion to this father that this is how he was brought up. i think maybe he called to tell the family of his engagement because? maybe they will be invited to the wedding or that he didn't want them to hear about it from someone else. he probably got caught in the emotion after talking to Elio and their affair came rushing to the forefront once he heard .."Elio Elio Elio" again...i just watched this movie for the first time last week and i feel bad i missed all the great chats about it...i can't stop watching it and would love to hear all the feedback since i have so many questions about it.
to your point, i feel like Elio broke Marzia's heart..even more cruel as she told him she was afraid of him doing just that...but in Elio's defense i think he did try to see how far their relationship would go..u recall after the "date" with Oliver was set up for midnight he rushed out and had sex with Marzia. i think he was a confused 17 year old and trying to find himself. In the end, Oliver was just way more of what he wanted.
