I know this is way too old, but I was reminded of a Twilight Zone episode with an old man and his dog.

Just throwing this out there, maybe will prod your memory. This can't be right but your description reminded me of "The Private Eyes" (1980) with Don Knotts as the Holmes character.
I finally found this episode, it is X-Files season 1 ep. 4 "Conduit" about 34 minutes in. Not computer printouts, but a kid draws 1s and 0s on papers then arranges them on the floor to make a picture of a woman's face.

Thank you. The search feature may be a bit odd. I was searching for the movie “Pulse” which should return several results. Specifically “Pulse (1988)” but I had to include the year to get the result.
